Unfortunately the designer took the site down sometime last year or this year. Fiddler’s Green still has the shuttle model Dan designed as well as a version of the Freedom 7 capsule.

Faith 7

Faith 7 was a little different due to the experiments mounted to the retropack (two Geiger counters if I’m remembering correctly). It also lacked the periscope, which was deemed unnecessary and removed for this mission. The hatch had a white outline around it and there were three paint patches applied to the upper section of the conic (I managed to miss it in my pictures). I like this one specifically for the retropack and I wish Dan had done a Freedom 7 II which had extra batteries attached.

jparenti, What type of paper are you using? It has a nice shine to it.

Honestly I’m not sure what the paper brand is as I have my stuff printed at a local print shop. It’s pretty standard card though. The shine is from the fact that this is all laser printed in color — some people don’t like laser printing but I prefer it because it preserves fine detail and doesn’t rub off onto my fingers.

I’ve debated experimenting with a spray coat of matte or semi-gloss to cut the shine back a little.

Aurora 7

Scott Carpenter’s capsule, the second orbital mission. I’ve gotten to where I can build one of these in about two hours with frequent breaks now. I’ve only got one left to go in the Mercury series before I move on to the Gemini models, possibly after doing examples of the Mercury launch vehicles.

One thing I also considered was going back and building a new Freedom 7 with modified windows — my original doesn’t have “glass” since I didn’t think to include it at the time. I’m also thinking of building a capsule to give to my nephew, after building some heavy internal reinforcements into it of course. If you do a basic build and strengthen the conic I think it would be a fine toy for a kid (and when it gets destroyed, it’s not expensive or difficult to replace!)

Friendship 7

The last of my series of Mercury capsules but the one that’s arguably the most recognizable. I grabbed one shot when it was still in the configuration of post-recovery.

Now I just have to line them all up for a group shot.

Myst spaceship

Something a little bit different from the Retro Rockets collection. Labeled as “Mystery Ship”, it’s the spaceship located on the island in the 1993 video game Myst, complete with its brick base. I loved this game for years and remember wanting to build this model since I saw it listed in the collection.
