Carl's a great guy, when you can catch him. LOL!

I started out a while back building Scott's 1/4 Mercury, but it proved to be too something for me to finish. The delay in building got stretched into the model being set aside, and many of the parts I'd already cut ended up missing. Too much lost to start over. So I moved on. This one at this scale, is really good. Ton is a fantastic designer, and his models go together really well. Post lots of pics!!

lancer,

I've built Ton's model Mercury twice so far -- once as a gift for my father, who used to work at McDonnell Douglas on the Gemini program, and a scaled down, 1/32 version that sits atop my flying Mercury/Atlas. I couldn't agree more about the quality of Ton's designs. His stuff is darn near magical.

Not sure if it's okay to post this, since I don't remember who it was that designed it. It's been so long ago that I've forgotten his screen name and whether or not he was here or at Zealot. Moderators, if permission is not granted, I apologize in advance. If anyone wants the original file, it's too large to post in a message so just PM me and I'll send it along. I'd post it in the Downloads, but it isn't my work.
I believe (don't hold me to it) that this was intended to be the outer skin and retropack for Surfduke's Mercury interior.

Scaling is what kept me from building it -- I believe it needs to be scaled up or down to fit, and I really have no idea which way it's supposed to go.

I found it!
It was drawn by Bob Bendorf (airbob) and posted at Zealot, way back in 2007. I finally found the thread:
Schirra Mercury Capsule now available! FREE! - Zealot Hobby Forum
And the download for the kit:
Project Mercury capsule

You are quite welcome. Strange that I was just looking at that file yesterday, before I even saw this thread. :D

Absolutely. It's remarkable how instances of serendipity happen like that sometimes.

Mercury Sigma 7 Outer Shell Design

Yes, jparenti,

Bob Bendorf really put some hard work in designing this remarkable 'skin' for the Mercury Sigma 7 'Wally Schirra' capsule by Carl. We had quite a lively and creative design discussion going, looking at detailed photos of the real thing and e-mailing back and forth almost every day for a period. I helped a bit with the roll attitude thrusters and the brown rim near the heat shield. It was great fun and I have to say that I think that Bob's design of the outer body of the Mercury capsule is the most realistic one there is in card.

Far better, IMHO, that the freebie from Delta 7 Studios.

Best,
Bengt in Stockholm

Bengt,

What scale is this model supposed to be?

Do I just copy and paste the picture? I couldn't figure out how to download a "kit".

Also, Delta 7 has a free Mercury? The only free model along those lines I was aware of was the little bitty MR-8

Thanks,

Mike
