Smile GNR Ivatt Atlantic

Another Micromodel from set PG VIII. This is a much more detailed kit, so it took longer to build. Regardless, the results are second to none.

The green dividers were an initial attempt to support the boiler. This was taken off in favor of a 4th panel to the front smokebox support.

Atlantics are one of my favorite wheel arrangements.

Is this Missouri yank correct in thinking the Ivatt loco was a pretty fair sized Atlantic by UK standards?

Thanks! Yes, the Ivatt Atlantic was one of the larger locomotive types to run on the GNR, and one of the more successful 4-4-2s in general.

They stayed in use with the LNER until stronger 4-6-2s and 4-6-0s were invented. Regardless, Atlantics of many types were used until the 1950's. The last one to run was an LBSCR Atlantic (similar to the Ivatt Atlantic).

Ahh, okay.

Over here the Pennsylvania, PRR, E-6 is my favorite Atlantic.
Husky brute - and FAST too.

From PENNSY POWER by Alvin F. Staufer, c. 1962, page 127.

Quote:
"PUREST OF THE PURE, PRIDE OF THE FLEET". The E6s Atlantics were everybody's favorite, even though none ever had stokers, feedwater heaters or power reverses.
Bud Rotharr got this quote from an E6s engineer, "nicest hand fired engines ever built. Speed Queens rode beautifully, but at 75 m.p.h. started a 'tipsy' side motion that many times scared crews, as they felt top heavy. Once up to 80 m.p.h., they settled back down and could keep right on climbing with no effort or effect on riding quality. They were very easy on coal and water, and were the pace-setters for timetable operations"
From what I've read, it seems they never did figure out how fast the things could go, but they could make 100+.

Here is a place with plenty of photos of them Railroading in the North East

See PRR Steam Roster Pt1 - NE Rails the PRR steam roster.
