Tatra Draisine 1:25 Scale GPM No 161

Gents, it's time for my next build:

The kit itself is quite simple. The main reason I'm building it is it gives me an excuse to build a base.

Started off by building up the outer skin

The kit does come with a basic interior. Which I will not be using

Any white edges are coloured in using a felt-tip pen

Built up the turret and added some scrap card to mask off the blank interior

More history on the this model can be found at:

I'll watch your work. That's cute machine and nice model.
I've made my own in 1:45 scale.

Could be a great GN15 loco

I noticed the drawbar on the front which means it could work as a locomotive. An inexpensive HO gauge 4 wheel diesel chassis underneath and run on HO track (or better ON30) and you have a running railroad at 1/2 inch scale and 15" between the rails.
Just sayin'

Gents

The main reason for this build is that it gives me an excuse to build a base.

There have recently been some great rail builds with fabulous bases. Not wanting to spend the time or money I am trying to do thinks a little more basic.

Also the base will not be too big (A5 size. The kit comes with a card base that includes an outer area that folds into a small plinth. This has been glued onto some foam board

Found that ice lolly sticks are too small. Had to buy some larger ones from Hobbycraft (Bag of twenty for 99p) the ballast was bought at a model show

These sticks are fine to cut with the grain, but a complete pain going across. Ended up using some geared tin snips. Will paint these an appropriate colour later. Wooden sleepers seem to range in colour from quite a bright cherry red to black. It very much depends on how new they are, what preservation treatment and what type of trains run over them.

Bought two types of ballast. Both seem to photograph well. Again ballast can be very subjective. I've seen everything from soil to cinders used. The ballast on the left would represent new ballast and on the right older.

Will get a chance to stare at more ballast tonight in Coventry working with this little beauty:

Plasser UK Ltd. - Commissioning of new machines - Machines

Base time:

Mounted the base in a deep picture frame

The rail housings were made from 1mm card cut to shape. First given a coat of deck brown, followed up with a gentle dry brush of africa brown. Lastly a wash of dark dirt.

These housings were then slide onto the card rail I had build up, and glued onto the sleepers. Used a card template to keep the housings in the correct place.

Once dry I ballasted up the layout. Used a mixture of ballast (Medium grey and Sand) from:

just-bases

Once happy with the stone. I mixed up some pva glue and water, to a 50/50 mixed and added a dash of washing up liquid. This mix I gently applied with a syringe.

This is the first time I have attempted this sort of thing. And it seems to have gone okay.

Now with the rails set I can build up the wheels and axles.
