Paper over lego

Has anyone done any railroad paper models that fit over 6-wide lego train running gear? Just thinking of projects to cross into the grandsons lego sets and interests.

How would you propose to attach the paper to the LEGO parts? Some kind of tab and slot, or try to make a female brick side in paper that can actually attach like a LEGO piece?

Hi Siwi. I was thinking a simple paper shell that just slips over a lego base and power unit with some lego internal support structure. Some EMD F-units seem the simplest to start with. May have to play with some paper-over-lego dimensions to see what can work and what might look decent.

Come to think of it, I had built a lego yard switcher for the boys. Maybe a paper shell over the two end blocks with some various 40-tonish schemes might be a good starting project.

That all sounds promising. I suppose the point of the paper componants is to be able to create shapes and colour schemes that aren't practical in LEGO bricks, or to disguise the motor.

Yep, the piece to hide is the battery box/receiver (the grey box in the photo above) which I think would work in a number of different units. Not meant to be absolutely accurate scale, rather just more interesting to look at than what can be done in lego bricks.

I even found a 25-ton GE yard switcher that I think is do-able.
