Thanks guys, so work on developing the model of the Fowler 2-6-4 continues. the frame, drive gear, cyliders, rear boggie and pony truck are pretty much done as shown in the images, I'm trying to keep the detail to what will be visable and whats buildable. It's now onto the cab and tanks.

I have a tonne of questions...


- What software are you using?
- What resources are you using for blueprints and technical drawings?

- Are you accounting for paper thickness when designing the parts, or making the parts correct thickness and working out how many layers of paper thick they will be afterwards?
- Will this be put up for sale as a kit?


I have a vague plan to create some British steam locos, but probably in O gauge and not in as tiny detail as this.

Hi Siwi,

Thanks for the questions.

The main drawings are produced in CorelDraw & exported to 3DS Max to produce the 3D model. To create the main drawings I photograph the drawings in the book then import them into Corel Draw where I can effectively draw over them before scaling to the correct size. All the parts are extruded to the correct thickness of paper/card in the 3D model so I know it will work. I have tried to show the process in the screen shot images.
The reference book I'm using is shown in the images, there are a series of these books published by Wild Swan so if this one works then it gives me scope to have a go at other classes of loco.
With regard to this being available for sale, I need to do a test build first but yes the ultimate goal would be to have a printed or downloadable fully colour kit with the addition of detailed parts available as a laser cut set.

Thanks again for all your comments. Just a quick update on the progress of my attempt to design a model in the style of Modelik, Angraf,GPM etc. The design is pretty much done so I'm not far away from starting the build now, I've been mocking up a couple of bits that I was a little unsure of namely the dome and the stack, I think the card stock was a little too thick but the shape is there. I've also built a prototype lamp to see if I could get the domed glass which I acheived by pressing heated acetate sheet into a hole with rounded modelling tool.
