SAR Narrow Gauge Garratt
Finished at last with this South African Railway Narrow Gauge Garratt.
Scratch built to a scale of 1:35, build time approx 300 hours. The NGG 13 Garratt was introduced to SAR in 1928, 10 were built by Hanomag in Germany to a wheel arrangement of 2-6-2+2-6-2 and weighed 61 tons in full working order they were for 2ft gauge track. |

Wow! A great model again!
The Garratt system steam locomotives are maybe lacking an elegance and classical proportions of the more standard locos but they are technically fascinating machines and a very complicated in the engineering sense, especially due to the movable connections of the high pressure steam piping, so rarely they are both satisfying and durable. And they are rarely modelled in paper (maybe except the Big Boy). Your model is really an impressive one!

A little known curiosity is that there is actually a fleet of Welsh Garratts in existance, running on the tight curves of the Welsh Highland Railway. They were formerly used in South Africa so I wonder how closely related they are to this model?

Thanks to all for your comments, Siwi re the Narrow Gauge Garratts at work on the Welsh Highland Railway, they are NGG16 Garratts, later cousins of the NGG13 as depicted in the model I built.
