More digging - "F1+" appears to be correct for III/St.G.77 (1940-42) - Michael Holm's website (The Luftwaffe, 1933-45). Not a clue why it was different from the rest of St.G.77. Since you are after III Stab markings the aircraft letter in yellow would be A,B or C (3 aircraft in a Gruppe Stab) with D as the final letter.
So it could have been F1 + (A,B or C) D. Sorry about the incorrect first try at the marking.

Regards,

Charlie

Not so fast - although the Stuka in the foreground of the image has an "F1" Geschwader code you can't actually see the Geschwader markings on the aircraft further from the camera. Also on the closest Stuka the aircraft and staffel codes aren't in frame. The visible Staffel code "M" decodes as 4 Staffel which should belong to II Gruppe. Also the visible Staffel emblems look consistent with 4 Staffel II/St.G.77.

Looking at Sturzkampfgeschwader 77 - the location charts show that II and III/St.G.77 were colocated from May to July 1942. The Stukas in the formation photograph could be a mixed group of II and III Gruppe aircraft.

Charlie
