What I did for the main deck is the use the magic of layers on the graphics programs (I use paint.net since it if free). I clone the original layer with the model graphics into a new layer, and then use the "magic brush" feature to delete everything except for the outline of the deck. I then create a new blank layer, and import a "texture" (actually just a picture) of an old iron object, like a boiler or something. Just anything that looks about right off the internet. Paste this on the blank layer, and stretch it or clone it as required to fill the area of the deck. I then make this "iron" layer semitransparent and merge it on to the layer with the deck outline. You end up with a layer with nothing but the iron looking deck plate. I also made another layer to create a little rust effect using smeared orange lines along the deck plate borders on the original image.
Mostly it's just playing around with masking and layering. I have the repainted Onondega just waiting to finish the turrets to be finished, just have to find the motivation. It's a lighter color based on the comments earlier in this thread.
