Talking New View!

Hi,

I made some more bits and am learning how to use the group and component feature. I have not fixed the hull.....yet! It is beginning to look menacing with the big guns sticking out!

The lines of CSS Texas were taken from the actual ship, pity the lines of the casemate aren't there as it differed considerably from CSS Columbia. Question, does anyone know if the surveys made of that ship on capture survived? I have not been able to trace them. I based my drawings and model on those by Bob Holcombe and in Iron Afloat by William Still.

Hi,

Yep, there is alot of information about CSS Texas out there, but unless you have the info from the USN archives most of it is speculation. The only public release of info on the CSS Texas is the two pics on the web. The rest on the internet is deduction from those two and a couple of peoples descriptions of the surveys the USN took of the ship after capture. The original plans and ship were measured and stored, but you gotta jump through hoops to be able to access them.....by requesting government documents.

Is Capitol Navy a book that would be at the library, I would like to see them? I am always looking for new information!

Yes, it's ISBN number is 1-882810-03-1.
Full title is:
Capital Navy; The men, ships and operations of the James River Squadron.

Beware of the plan of CSS Richmond on pages 256 -257. It is not. It is a generic 150ft Ironclad gunboat. CSS Richmond was completed to a different profile and detail. In fact 3 of the 6 ships were different, only CSS Savannah, North Carolina and Raleigh being completed to the original plans by Porter.

CSS Frederiksburg and Virginia II, and Texas are substantially correct.

Hi,

Thanks, I will check for it! I am also starting to look for books in the stores about ironclads, but I think I will be finding the most online. I like to look at them first to see if they have actual pics or drawings of each vessel, alot of what you find doesn't match. So you start asking which one is correct, then when you can't find a factual answer.....you juz start makin stuff up! But is all fun!

The plans that i have are from the National Archives. The plan numbers for the Columbia are 41-5-8,9and 10. Plan number 81-12-2h is listed as well. It and the brooke side view are listed as being in record group 19. The plans for Columbia are for sale from The Maryland Silver Company for 30.00$.

Hey There Ironcladman.

Your question about planking?

Using Google Sketchup, go to the SketchUcation board. (this link) http://forums.sketchucation.com/viewtopic.php?t=28586

You'll have to join to download the files, but grab Curviloft 1.1a and you'll need LibFredo6 by the same author. (link here) http://forums.sketchucation.com/viewtopic.php?t=28586

With those you can do just what Knife mentioned. I take a series of curves, click the Face model and "Create loft junctions between surfaces based on spline curves". This thing is INCREDIBLE. Has a ton of options, but is relatively simple to use. I lost 9 hours of sleep one night to it, because I was playing around joining shapes together.

Nothing like this thing to take your cross sections and turn them into a real item.

Talking Good Plan!

Hi,

Sounds great! Do you have a thumbnail of these or is there a thumbnail on that site so I can see what all they cover?
