This is excellent. I have been wondering about building this type of model for a while. I had thought of using an existing kit though.
I will be keeping an eye (well both actually) on your progress. ~ Douglas |

That is soo cool Bluenoser, nice job, can the other not be built then? You have done a great job with the half model, seems to me the entire tug is a doable project....what scale are you in? I drew this boat up from the plans in 1/96 and it comes to be a large vessel...(transiently considered using a similar tug to "pull" my present ship project)

Beautiful work. The reason the hull planking does not line up is because the photo (drawing) from the side just shows where it ends in that plane. Making the real "plank", the line as is referenced gives the end the plank in relation to the former. It is not ever intended to be the length of the plank and could not, as it a 2 dimensional drawing. Notwithstanding, that is one smooth and fair hull you made there and the cabin structure is awesome. I love half models. When I was a kid I hated them, as you could not play with them. As an adult, I realise their place, and find them intriguing, as your model is fast becoming.

Thanks for the encouragement guys.
Birder: The scale works out to be roughly 1"=17'. I just used the 'print to fit' for a 8.5"X11" page when I started this. The finished length comes out to 9.125" long. This is definitely a doable model for a full hull construction and would be super cool, but I would make it bigger though. Zathros: Thank you for the 'Hull Expansion Plates' clarification. I did not know that and it definitly explains the outcome of the hull build. |

The Hercules is a nice-looking boat. I am impressed with what you did with your "throw-away" hull.
Zathros has it right, the plates are foreshortened in the drawing and would require the somewhat tedious task of calculating the actual width, length and curve of each length of plates. Based on your work so far, this is going to be a beautiful model. Chris |

This is a superb model in the tradition of half-hull boat and ship models.
The pre-paint under construction photos and the superstructure in its unpainted state are wonderful images. Don |

I wanted to try making the life boat a little differently as an experiment. I skinned it over as shown in the picture below. This went on easy enough and then I added horizontal "planks" to cover up the spaces. It was easy but it didn't produce the fullness in the mid section of the boat. The hull was still wet from the glue so I split the mid section of the boat open horizontally and then pack in toilet tissue to get the roundness to the hull's mid section and then skinne over with horizontal planks again. It turned out OK but I would not build it this way in the future.
