Bluenoser, You know you sailing ships. Did you take a look at the Hull plans of the real Surprise on Doug 's link to the "The Ships of Jack Aubrey' (great find Doug) she bares a striking resemblance to the American Brig SPARK, 1815 which is described as a Clipper model (Chapelle's "the History of the American Sailing Navy"). Enough of the rivet counting Aubrey's HMS Surprise can be anything the model builder wants it to be. Jim Nunn

I have most of Chapelle's books. They are jam packed with lines plans, sail plans and general details of ships and everyone of them examines the evolution of the ship. They form the core of my library which is primarily centered around sailing vessels.

If you do use one of the ShipYard kits you may wish to consider that the real Surprize was re-equipped with carronades after she was taken from the French.

Actually, the HMS Surprise of the Aubrey/Maturin novels was an historic ship. She was originally built as a French Corvette named Unite, captured by the British and renamed. Unfortunately, none of the Shipyard kits depict this ship since the three kits are of British-built frigates built in the 1770's. Although there were differences between the historic ship and the fictional one, the ship in the book was intended to depict the ship of history, down to the Hermione incident. I believe that I once read that the historic ship did carry a mainmast made for a 38 gun Frigate, but I cannot be sure.
