Mike,

Those are excellent cranes. You are right it is a good thing there are some great photos out there, but your sheer skill and ability make them come to life with paper.

thank you for the tutorial on the rigging.

Mike,
Thank you for the explanation
Even using the ruler it looks not easy to cut the narrow strips of paper in uniform width as paper sometimes move under the ruler. I will give it a try later.
Why didn’t I think of the center cut out carddboard to hold the thin strips of paper though I would stretch the threads lengthwise and crosswise on the center cut out cardboard to build a railing

24 - Cranes, Boats, Aft Superstructure . . .

Good Morning Modelers,

Thank you Greg. Glad to read you enjoy pre-dreadnought projects.

The completion of Iowa’s cranes allowed for the installation of steam pipes, boats, guns, signal-light, searchlights and platforms. The first images show the steam pipes. Because of their length, it was not possible for me to roll them from one piece of paper. So I cut the pipe at one of the seams and rolled two pieces for each pipe. Then I put them back together at the seam.

Included is another historical image with an excellent view of the starboard crane. It really shows all the details. One of the things I also like about this image is the sailor in the background on the starboard superstructure wing using signal flags. What is more interesting, if you look closely, you can see him three or four feet (perched on something) above the wing. He seems to be approx four feet above the top of the railing.

The remaining three boats between the cranes are now installed. That allowed work to proceed with the aft signal-light platform, installed on the aft searchlight platform. The deck pieces of the signal-light and the searchlight platforms are made of card. All the other parts are paper. I have included several good overview images.

Regards,
Mike

It is always a great pleasure to see your clean, precise detail work, Mike.

These small platforms, guns, searchlights, railing, and ladders are like fine jewelry, and the images of the ship with its decks crowded with pulling boats are most impressive.

Thanks, as always, for the evocative historic photo (sailors always seem to be leaning on or over railings in these images, down't they).

Did you set the die at "Five" in honor of the passing of Dave Brubeck? WRTI has been playing a lot of his music this week.

Don
