Update on what's going on, I've been trying to decide whether to go with trysail or spencer masts as shown in Chapelle, some models go with this, most that I see did not, it is unusual for a ship to be equipped with them at fore and main, although common at the mizzen where called a driver or spanker mast. Finally think I should stick with Chapelle although will be a bit more work. With this in mind have been making them, and some simple mast step, also need to put in the fife rails then can put up the main stay which it appears goes to the forward one. Waiting on putting in the cabin until can see clearance under the mainstay. Slow progress with having to decide these things as models differ in some of these details, but interesting stuff and Charles Davis is helpful. The mainmast shroud lines will have to wait for some of this..
This drawing appears to show gaff booms that come off the trysail masts..

Hello Glen,
Glad to hear about the research you are putting into your next steps. I'm getting an education reading about it. Looking forward to the photos of the mast work. Mike |

Here you go Mike this shows alot clearer than a description .. also shows how putting in the belaying posts so can be strong enough to tie lines to later, but have to put in some belaying pins.

Good show Glen.
Cleanly detailed. You know . . . This is a project that will have to be completed. |

Working on the old girl, main mast and trysail mast up, glued, shrouds on the masthead , working on lanyards for deadeyes. Today made parts for the mizzen so can move ahead there. Unfortunately only had enough deadeyes for the main shrouds, so back to the now famous Frosted pie cardstock. Punched out enough for about 40 more, need 20 just for the mizzen shroudlines. (will need quite a few more than that for the topmasts when I get that far) Gluing 3 discs of card with center one a tad smaller, will need to harden these with ca glue, drill, paint, then will need to make some more chainplates. Growth of the model is slow, but pretty cool, I'm glad to have made the masts earlier. No yards have been made yet. Figured out I think the mainstay but confused about the mizzen stay I have no real guidance there that I can find but is likely not that complicated the main trysail mast getting in the way for the usual attachment.

Will give it the old college try, I get distracted easily with the details needed for this type of model so fits and spurts but this one has remained good enough to come back to as long as am happy with the work...

Glad to see work progressing. As Mike says, this thread is a real education in the way sailing ships of this era were put together.

Hello Glen.
That is "clean" rigging. It really looks good. This "old girl" looks like a young beauty to me. Mike |

An update with a little progress, glued in the mizzen, and added the driver mast as the trysail mast is termed on the mizzen. Nearly done with the lower mast standing rigging, lots of little knots to tie, but at that time can move up to the topmasts. Can start to think about the metal cranes that hold on the lower yards and pretty soon some yards. Roving the deadeyes seems overly tedious, but it is actually kind of fun. Lots of trimming to do on the lines but you can see where things are presently.
