fiddling around

using a stump of a mast to see how things will line up

i've started using paper "angle iron" to make my joints... with a light coating of glue it sticks instantly and keeps things straight and lined up while they glue

my cardboard "walls" seem to have sprung inwards, so i used a piece of chopstick to press them back out

i cut it just a tiny be longer than the structure is wide, then put it in at an angle.. when i pushed it straight it pushes out on the side walls

building a box.... adding internal "gussets" of folded paper

applying the skin

having built the internal structure now its time to apply the "walls"

the walls have the portholes punched out, the internal structure is painted black in the appropriate spots
and the edges of the portholes are painted black on the inside

port hole gutters

i make the semi-circular gutters that are over every porthole from fine copper wire

i roll it round something of the right thickness and then cut the coil in 2 halves

sometimes its still necessary to "trim" a little off each half to get the right size

casting doors

i decided to make more detailed doors

working from a drawing of a door in the AOS book

i made up multiple layers

small circular cut outs where created using a new set of punches

i painted the "master" door with varnish to "seal" it

molds

i made my molds from bakable clay, i made multiple masters and then cast the doors

the casting worked, but the molds were not flexible and the casting were so thin then broke apart when trying to get them out of the molds

back to the drawing board...

paper doors

i learned enough making the paper "master" for the cast doors that i decided to just make the doors from paper,

i used regular weight paper, so that they would not end up being too thick
3 layers for each door

the "handles" are from thinned down bamboo and the door handle from thin copper wire

a stair well

making a stair well

the model just has the stairs going down printed on the deck

cut that out

substitute wooden stairs with paper side walls

a little detail that makes the model much more visually interesting

round things

instead of using the round top and bottom plates supplied in the model, i make a "round" piece by creating a solid interior.

just keep wrapping until you get the right diameter

then glue the "skin" on

the bridge

i was going to build this with "black" windows, but then i realized there was detail you could see thru the windows, so i put them in as empty frames

this whole area got a little messy, i had to put a spacer under the bridge windows
