Warspite 1/250 Halinski

starting in the middle somewhere and working both forwards and backwards

here are the small guns along the sides, barrels turned of brass tube (using an electric drill and a file) and the canvas gaskets made of oven cured clay

laying out the rear deck

i made decks by laminating little strips of wood and then sanding them flat, it came out with a good "look" but with some big cracks as well

here i've cut out all the places that fittings go from a copy of the original rear deck and marked the locations with a pencil

the hatches in the torpedo buldge

first i made a card template to trace all the hatches

then i "embossed" then with a sharp pointer

then i went over that embossing with the lead pencil

drains

there are drains set along the side of the ship

i made a template and then cut the basic shape from my favorite material these days, the sticks ice cream bars come on

then i shaped both outside and the mouth with small files and attached to the side of the ship

making ladders

like goldilocks, first a ladder that is too fat

bamboo is a wonderful material, and a drawplate will let me turn out small little rods of it

so then i tried getting some plastic rod...it was more the right size, but gluing it up was a mess

so i made a new match of bamboo, drawn down a couple of sizes smaller

that gave me the right size

then !!! i realized that the ladders do not sit flush against the side, but go up and an angle

i was able to salvage my work in the "short" ladders by gluing the two of them together and getting one "long" ladder

railing

i made the railings of the same size, and just glued them to the side

rightly they should be set out a little, but they are already way bigger than scale and (the big trick in modeling) i have to draw the line somewhere

i'm not used to 1/250, so its hard to know just where to stop

Wow, so much good info so quick! Thank you. Your build is coming along great and so is your written information. That ladder idea will work just as well for my 1/250 scale ironclads as on your big warship!

I've had the Halinski Warspite for a while, and it's good to see it built. I may have missed this part somewhere in the thread, but did you rescale it from the 1/200 kit? I like it!
