Oslabya Build - Digital Navy 1:250 scale

Oslabya Build
(Digital Navy 1:250 scale)

She went to the bottom under a hail of gunfire from a superior Japanese squadron in the Battle of Tsushima Strait.

Now 103 years later, through the magic of card & computer, Oslabya rises slowly from my debris-strewn shipyard. This is my kind of boat. She has those sloping sides just bristling with guns. And the DNA in those masts can be traced back to the days of wind & sail.

This thread is intended to take over from my “welcome” thread, where I introduce the project with a pair of attached images. This puts the whole article into the “SHIPS AND WATERCRAFT” forum where it belongs. Attached are a few images to show her from the start date (Sep 2008) to present.

As a rookie to the craft, this build may go a little slow, so it will be “steady as she goes”.

Nope, I don't think you're a rookie either. This is an impressive beginning!

I don't buy the "rookie thing either"... not after seeing that perfect hull. I also usually use wood for my upper masts, although I sometimes use paper with a wire core. I find that unsupported card or paper doesn't handle rigging at all well. Nice choice of subject, Michael. Thanks for showing this.

It looks as if you are using paper railings. Did you stiffen them with CA or something first?

Steady as she goes seems to get excellent results. Nice start - this is a very pretty ship can't wait to see more.

Yes, to make the railing I used 28lb paper. The black paint is the only "glue". It seems to work. They did not crack or come apart when I shaped them for the crows nest.

Welcome to the nut house Mike. Nice project to start off with. Thanks for sharing.

Doesn't look like "rookie" work to me. You should see some of my older models...

Beautiful work. Excellent propellors. The 3/4 front view is very impressive.

Except for the propellers, this posting marks the completion of the hull below-the-waterline phase of the build. Propellers are scheduled for remanufacture, since I did not like the look of them as completed. Attached are views from bow and stern.

I have included a third image (a close-up of the rudder) to show some detail. It appears to have an “open frame” type of construction. I thought it unusual because it would seem to invite drag and turbulence. I can’t help wonder what the designers had in mind. In any case, it will remain forever one of the intriguing characteristics of this old ghost.
