TS Travestein

I haven't built any models in a while and was itching to get started. I haven't done a freighter yet so this was my my next pick. It is the Wilhelmshavener Weserstien/Travestien. It comes pre-printed as the Weserstien with opitonal parts to build either ship. I am going to build the Travestien as I like the square window arrangement on the lower superstructure better than the round.
It is 1/250 scale and has 4 sheets of parts.

I laminated the internal structural parts on thin cardboard box. There is a corrugated inner piece on the cardboard so it will have lots of rigidity. I did not do any additional lamination to the bottom (waterline) piece.

I started by joining the sections of hull plates together. Bow and mid pieces together but left and right sides were still separate. The left and right stern pieces were however completely joined. A centre strip joins these two parts together. It is longer than needed so I just aligned the color separation and then trim to fit afterward.

The left and right bow plates join together with a longer than necessary strip similarly as the stern. The bow does come to a hard edge near the waterline but is rounde near the top. Therefore I only scored the part 3/4 of its length (as noted by the pencil line drawn on the back face). The artwork on the bow shield is off register.

I wasn't sure on how the stem part was supposed to attach to the inner structure and the hull plates. I decided that I would attach it to the hull plates first with a butt strap. This would at least make a nice joint. The inner structure then would just hold the part wherever contact was to be made.
Also note the hole through the anchor, I plan on making one. Will look better than printed.

Photos of the ship show significantly a number of scuppers along her length whereas the model does not have these. I want them so I simply drew these on the bulwarks, which are part of the deck piece. This seemed like the place to do it since this way I could at least be sure that the lined up with the printed bollards on the deck. I guesstimated the size.

Here they are cut out on the fore and aft sections of the main deck.

I glued the decks into place on the inner structure. Then I dry clipped the hull plating to the bulwarks and transfered the scupper positions onto the hull plating. Un-clip this and then trim scuppers in the hull plating. Easier to do on the cutting mat than on the model.

I glued the hull plates to the model starting at the bow. With these on and set, I dry fit the full stern piece. As can be seen from the picture, this does not have a good fit at the aft deck. To get around this problem I cut the joint strip applied earlier. Had I known this was going to happen, I wounldn't have bothered putting the strip on. I then justed glued the right stern piece on, let dry and then the left stern piece. I allowed the back to overlap however it wanted to, as long as there was contact at the deck.

... and so there is the hull (as the Weserstein). The stern looks fine now too.
