Barry, make me laugh. That IS a close up! I can go closer if you like. THe glacis is a single, folded, piece with the ridges colored on. I should have cut out the hole for the center structure first but it is pretty firm as it is.

Sorry that the camber is hard to see but it is to scale. Do you put camber on your decks? I don't really think that it is worth the trouble unless there is a ship with extreme camber. For non designers, working without camber means that you can draw a straight line from one edge to the other and simplifies modeling enormously.

Well the drawing of the ridges was more than good enough to make me wonder if you glued strips on.

Did a camber once it was more trouble than it was effective I doubt if I will do it again

The camber and the fit to the glacis and other parts cost me maybe a month of my life. Just don't see the value of it. Fred will see it when he builds it - although he thinks a different Beta builder should step forward for the honor - but it really is just there to avoid some designer/builder going, "<sniff> if he was any good he would have put in the camber."

Another way to put it is that it costs me about a complete model for every two that I put camber into.

The glacis is an extraordinarily complex shape. To fit it to a cambered deck is beyond my comprehension -- too many things have to fit together in too many dimensions with a very slight curvature to cope with as well. I can see how it would take a month of your life. Not for me to judge if it is worth it, but the result, even in the photos, is very satisfying to the eye.

...and here are close ups of the glacis.

One of them shows a light gun made with individual pieces vs. the folded-from-the-base method that the Russian designers use (improperly I might add). It is much easier to do it with separate pieces (copyright Golden Bear Models, hee).

...also some fans of paper modeling.

The glacis is beautiful and so are the cats. Lil liked the photo of the cats, too.

Carl is working so fast he can support multiple beta builders! The camber just shows how he has mastered the art. I figure by the time I get Victoria done, he will have Hoche ready, and I very much want to do Hoche.

So that central assembly in the gun turret area is called a glacis? Interesting. And complex. Like most of the boats you choose to build, this one has its unique characteristics. Nice work.

It seems you whip through that complex glacis beautifully...

I believe that glacis refers to a sloping protective surface. I think that the sloping armor on a tank, for instance, could be called glacis. The term was used a lot for describing Vauban fortifications. Properly I should probably call it "the center glacis faced structure" but that seems cumbersome.

And thank you YuG. I only showed the tiniest amount of what I went through to get the thing to fit relatively well. I flipped one of the mating pieces which has left a gap - I'll either cover it with a paper redo or rely on the turret to hide it. Surprisingly, the glacis fit perfectly on the first try after I tricked around with all the other stuff over the course of weeks. That is actually the one and only version of the slopey piece that I've made.
