JSC 1/400 ORP Dragon
Hi folks, I thought I would take a break from the Mikasa that I am working on and do a quick build. I got this kit for Christmas. It has 2006 on the book but I wonder if the design is older. It looks hand drawn with nice thick lines and simplified detail. Don't take this as a criticism as the result so far is very pleasing and the build has been fairly simple and fun. I was thinking if this was a Heller 1/400 plastic kit, it would look far simpler out of the box and would not look as good as this one if made by me.
The only criticism I have is that the card is somewhat soft and it is tricky to get smaller parts to hold their shape. Some of the tabs also have delaminated , leaving the surface still glued in place. But once I was prepared for this to happen, I was able to take extra care and the problem became less. I plan to make this out of the box. I haven't done any research apart from looking at a couple of pictures to get a feel for the real ship. I don't know if this is accurate or not, but it looks like the original to me and I am having a lot of fun. What you see is a days work, with significant breaks between work sessions. One area where I deviated from plans was the hull. I like making the hull frame work the JSC way, but can't get the surfaces to fit well. So I make a shell by butt gluing the sides to the deck, then slicing up the hull formers and fitting them inside. This hull fit so well that I could have got away with just using the shell if I glued it to some kind of base. I have also painted the black on the funnels and painted the inside of the walls around the bridge and gun emplacements grey. |

this is looking good. i re-started card model ships on JSC models. Their method of hull tech was different but once used to it they have limited the ribs showing thru or the starved dog look of hull . I wish i can figure out how they do this as despite the lack of fiddley details the main parts of their models go together well. as for delamination that is a problem with using card stock for small parts. in one of their kits english translations they have you consider peeling a layer of card to make the part more pliable. i can't remember which kit.

Thanks for the tip about peeling the layers apart on smaller pieces. There are a few small boxes and search lights and such to come. I will try that tip.

I made a mistake. I have been using the picture of the completed model on the cover as a guide. There is a mistake on that model. The middle deck of the bridge is back to front. It should be flush with the bridge structures at the front, and stick out at the back. Luckily I was able to slice the bridge apart with a double edge razor blade and correct it. The blue face at the top was originally a little longer and should meet the green face below. I had cut it to make it fit the other way I had it. The instructions mention this. I should have looked at them earlier. Also the green wall around the top deck of the bridge should be 1mm lower at the front than the back part. The instructions mention this. I think I will leave it as correcting it might damage it.
Besides my mistake, everything is going together well. As you can see, I also started the mast and made the first gun. The mast and gun barrel are carbon fibre rod. |

she's lookin good. the sign of a real modeler is not putting together an easy kit. it is one that can overcome the problems a kit has and make the model look great. well done!

Hi all, belated thanks for the kind comments. It has been a while since I did any work on this model. I did the main guns and a few bits and pieces. There ate still AA guns and the masts to come, but otherwise it is almost done.
The kit comes with three submarines. I had a go at one of them. It is not finished yet, just like all of my projects. It is the journey, not the destination I say. Robert |

Robert, she looks great. I have an old Rubbermaid container that I call the island of un finished kits. IIRC the gpm f-15 is there, several hobby model kits, several maly modelarz kits, all in various stages of completion. "someday" they may be built. On my desk, is the shimakaze, a rescaled a6mn2, and 2 f5e tigers half completed also. as you pointed out it is the journey! enjoy my friend!
