USS Indianapolis by JSC 1/400 scale
Well it is kinda the JSC kit, but all who have followed Marco's threads, in 1/400 scale and others will know that although well designed they lack some details. The colours they come as printed are also a little suspect. I built the kit many years ago as it comes from the booklet. It was mounted on a card stock base with acrylic water. My son had it in his room for years because I didn't like the colors and lack of detail. I bought another kit, scanned it and re-edited and detailed it in paintshop pro, and mgi photosuite. The stock kit has a yellow, yes yellow deck, gray lower hull, and very rudimentary armament. The ship was done before I thought of photo shooting the build, very sorry for this but here she is pt1...

JSC Indianapolis pt 2
More comparison and contrast shows fwd and aft hull comparisons. The deck was colored deck blue and weathered to show some fading. The JSC kit has open tubs and mounts for gun directors and fire control gear that isn't supplied. The gun turrets are very suspect. While gathering info for re doing the kit our Darwin was giving advice on some one else on the turrets looking like Quonset huts and they needed to be flattened. So here are the before and after on these parts...

Midships comparison.Pt3
Another area for improvement is the midships section. The hanger, catapult and seaplane are very graphic arts like in the kit. Also the mast sections are over simplified. The mast was built up using our plastic brothers finished kits at steel navy as a guide. The seahawk planes were redrawn and colured. The cat is from the Wichita kit, ladders are scratch built...

Last little bits, the end!
As above some close up of some superstructure details and mast antennae details. Overall, the stock kit went together well and is suited for novice to advance novice builders. But for detail nuts like Marco and I they are a good base for detailing. For the slightly impatient, you can use the tons of after market parts, photo etched, for 1/350 scale kits that are out there. The scale difference is negligible, ie a t foot barrel in 1/400 is 7.6mm. In 1/350 it would be 8.3mm. at typical viewing distance you really can't see .7mm. I say this because I used master models 40mm barrels in brass.
