HMAS Lismore

Hi to all,
My model of HMAS Lismore at 1/96 scale scratch built. Built this model of the Bathurst mine sweeping sloop class some years ago when I saw a free plan on the magazine Model Boats. Again at that time 30/25 years ago I thought that I was alone to use card instead of wood or plastic card. He he how wrong I was!
Today I tried to shoot some close up photos. I was surprised may be because of the camera flash how many defects show up in the paint work. I assure you that to the naked eye these defects do not show. Next time shoot outside my boy. In photo 5 main item are the sweeping floats. Could not do these in card so I made them from Milliput. Only the fins are made of card.

HMAS Lismore

Thanks Don,
Photo6 Funnel was made from card. Used a broom stick as a former and the over lap was place looking aft. Overlap was hidden under the narrow steam pipes. Funnel cap made from milliput. "F" vents again made of card with a biro outer chasing as a former and the top was made with milliput.
Photo 7 Deck plank was made by making grooves in the main deck card with my modelling knife. To make sure that the deck would not give in I placed a piece of card under the planked deck area. Deck bleached teak paint made the rest.

HMAS Lismore

Photo 8 and 9. Starboard rowing boat and Port side motor boat were made with milliput as at that time I did not know how to make a full keel boat with card and paper. Now I know how. The boats where then covered with long narrow strips of paper to simulate a clinker hull. Curly floats made from milliput and card deck.

HMAS Lismore

Photo 10. From the few information I had on this vessel I could gather that the ladders of fore and aft masts were not made of metal but were made with some kind of rope. So I made these with sewing black thread. I cut lengths of tread in excess to the length required and glued them at the end of two nails on a piece of wood. I gave them three coasts of mat black paint and when dry they were like thin wire. Placed them on a card on which I draw the ladders. The extra length of painted thread were glued with super glue as runners. Thank God they gave me no trouble.
Photo 11 again deck plank simulation and main gun made all from card except the gun barrel.

Thanks for this additional info and close ups. The closer one looks at this model, the more detail reveals itself and the better the ship looks.

HMAS Lismore

I was going to forget. Port holes. Usually on other models I used to punch holes in card for port holes and then put a piece of transparent plastic from inside to simulate glass. The result was some times a disaster. Port holes were not always in line and plastic from inside would not hold in position because of the contours of the ship's hull. So after a bit of thinking I no longer punched holes for the port holes. I took a large piece of transparent plastic like those with see threw baby dress packs and painted dark grey paint on one side and let the other side in the original form. When the painted side would dry I would punch the port holes from the plastic sheet and glue them with super glue to the hull or superstructure from the painted side. So I would have the painted side of the port hole stuck to the hull and the shinny part on the out side.
Pennant numbers are all hand painted by my self. I draw the numbers on the hull like we did at school in technical drawing and then paint them with a fine brush. Retouching is a must.
Hope you find my tips helpful. Any questions will be happy to answer.
SengleaPoint.
