Hms lance - wak 1/200

Hi everyone,

This is my 1st work in progress thread, it is for my current build which is HMS LANCE, an L Class Destroyer, that was only in service for a year when she was hit by dive bombers whilst in harbour undergoing repairs, and written off.

My 2 previous builds never made it to completion, but the 1st taught me a lot about preparing the hull etc, the 2nd taught me more around the finer details. I'm hoping I can pull together what I've learnt so far and with hints and tips from this community I can make it to the end and get better along the way.

1st up a few pictures of the Kit, I've purchased the Laset Cut frames and the barrels for the kit.

I assembled the laser cut frames, following which I've roughly filled the gaps between the formers with corrugated card. Once this was completed I covered the whole lot in Polycell Lightweight Filler.

After this its a case of sanding and filling, sanding and filling until I get smooth surface following the shape of the formers. So far so good and whilst there are a few light srface imperfections I'm happy with the overall shape. But I guess I'll see how good it is when adding the hul parts.

Meanwhile whilst the filler was drying etc I started work on the rear superstructure and got the main parts together, as below. Next steps will be to get the main hull parts on and continue with the rear superstructure small parts.

Thanks for looking, any criticisms, pointers or tips gratefully received. It's the only way to learn.

Want to learn too

Hi I have been scratch building ships these last say 30 years. Card was my material from cereal boxes. Believed I was the only one to use card. Wood and plastic card were the norm. So did not know nothing about paper models
I paint my models and in so doing hide also my mistakes which are many.
I have some questions to make.
1)The hull of model HMS Lance is made of wood or paper? As if it is made of paper how could it be sanded?
2) Paper kits have their hull, superstructure and decks already colour printed. Then I ask how can you hide mistakes or excess glue?
3) A model if it is not put in a glass case after say two or three years, all the decks together with fittings will have a film of dust on them. Even if you try to clean the decks with a brush the dust film remains there. So how do you solve the dust problem?
I my self solve it by repainting the decks which is not an easy job to do especially with rigging etc.
Thanks, SengleaPoint.

I'll answer some of these questions.
2 - be careful not to use excess glue(practice)
3 - I dust with a paint brush after blowing. I have no issue with a small amounts of dust, actually makes the ship look a bit weathered.

Thanks for the compliment Don, hopefully progress will continue in a similar way, and yes she is a beautiful ship.

Hi Senglea Point, The hull is laser cut card and household filler, it is the filler that can be sanded. Like paperfan I am hoping that careful construction will prevent the need to hide anythings, but so far any minor mismatches etc have been addressed with water colour paint.

Which brings me to more recent progress. I have manged to get the hull covered, there were some small mismatches in the lower hull plates probably down to my alignment, and/or cutting, however I covered these and filled with a suitable paint mixed from watercolour pencils. I'm planning on doing some more weathering to these lower hull plates in attempt to blend things together.

The upper hull plates had slightly larger issues, but with the duobling up to create the plated effect these issues should be mostly hidden. Finally a few small details were added to the rear superstructure.

Thanks for looking

Thanks

Hi Paper Fan and Scuderia,
Thanks for finding the time for answering my questions. As said I am new here but I have been building card scratch models more then 30 years now. I make many mistakes and thanks to the paint I fix them. The only problem I have regarding paint is that some shades of colour are discontinued or shade made pale or darker from the original. Imagine I have colour No7 yellow by Humbrol at four different shades.
I cannot stand dust. Here in Malta we have a lot of wind (thank God for it or else summer heat would kill us) but since we have our buildings in lime stone, wind erosion produces lots of dust. So have to repaint the model's decks every three years.
Thanks again
SengleaPoint.

Small update, everything seems to take me so long! This has been at least a weeks effort, which has only consisted of, making one of the 4" guns, soldering a mast (that was an entire evening!!) and a few Ammo boxes. I have also made the stand and started on the props rudder, but they are not ready yet.

I did do some railings for the rear superstructure but I wasnt happy with how they turned out so I removed them, and will need to repair the damage and start again.

Thanks for the comments and it's been a long time since I've managed to post any updates, although work has not stopped on her.

I got hold of a set of Laser cut railings from GPM to try out until I can get to practice on making post and thread versions, these do the job but to my mind are a bit chunky.

In my absence I have completed the rear superstructure apart from the rigging, the search light platform, the Pom Pom platform and most of the forward superstructure including all the Guns.

It is moving into smaller elements now and the rigging, which terrifies me, so don't be surprised if progress slows/pauses whilst I focus on other less scary things, like the 6x6 Cougar in the background of 1 of the photos

Anyways here are some photos of how she is now.
