Tin Toy boat
I found that this boat was so nice that I decided to make it in paper.
This is an old tin toy from the Kellermann or Gunthermann manufacturer, early XXe. Now, just have to print and build... |

Interesting thing. Is that a clockwork winder protruding from stack?

What I don't understand is the flattened shoe horn on the back. I wonder if it was supposed to be an attachment for a rudder, or is it just a way to hang it on the wall?

I can't help you because there is no explanation on the site wich is here :
The papermodel is now finished. You can see some picture of the build. It is a very simple model (I simplify the hull for easier build. I always do it for the non papermodeler...). You can dowload the model here, on my blog. |

Bingo! Google found a posting with an image showing that yes, that is upper rudder mount for that boat. Other images and text indicate it was indeed intended for floating operation.
Wells (UK) Tinplate Clockwork Paddle Boat | Vectis Toy Auctions I have always found tinplate clockwork boats appealing, and doing a tinplate boat Google image search was a very, very, bad idea! Oh my gosh there are some gorgeous ones out there. Found a 2014 thread on modelboatmayhem where a member was scratchbuilding (well, some of it is) a clockwork tinplate (and brass) antique battleship with radio control steering. Clockwork Battleship Apparently a number of clockwork boats have the tab on winding stem shaped to suggest smoke from the stack.
