HMAS Australia County-class heavy cruiser
I think I'm ready to start my next scratch project. Just like I announced some time ago, I'll build a HMAS Australia County-class heavy cruiser.
Scale is 1/1000. I have not decided about the camouflage yet. I consider the appearance from Guadalcanal 1942(picture 1) or entirely gray version(picture 2). From what I know Australia was usually painted entirely gray, Gudalcanal was probably the only exception. If anybody knows something more about paints used by Royal Australian Navy for WWII camouflages I'd be glad to learn something more. So far, I've prepared the blueprints. They're scaled to 1/1000. I took one photo with my Maryland so you can see how large will be Australia. Both ships had similar lenght, 190m(although some sources state that Australia was 192m long). Here's the full thread about my USS Maryland BB-46, if anyone's interested: USS Maryland BB-46 (1944) Ok, wish me luck with this HMAS Australia. This will be my main source: HMAS Australia (II) | Royal Australian Navy Model will be a waterline version with sea diorama.

Looks like a good project to start and complete.
I remember when we did ops off of Guadalcanal we rendered honors at Iron Bottom Sound. I only heard it over the 1MC because my station was in the engineroom.

Best of luck Kacper. I'll be following this with understandable interest.
The closest I ever came to modeling something similar was as a kid building the old Airfix 1/600 HMS Suffolk.

Australia's hull is basically finished. Now it just needs some smaller details like anchors, etc.
Continuation probably tomorrow.

My father served on the Australia in 1953. At that time it was a training ship and had been modified with examples of all the types of guns a sailor would use in the navy if the time.
During the second half of WW2 Australia was painted Chicago blue as it was operating with US ships. It was during this time that it received its several hits by kamikaze. Robert |

What is the "Chicago blue"? I can't find anything like this.
Would be good to know because I'm planning to visit modeler's store tomorrow to buy some new paints.

It was the name of the colour made up to match the US Navy ships it was in action with. One was the USS Chicago so I guess it was named after that. It was a dark blue colour.
The link below has several drawings in colour of the colour schemes that the Australia wore during her life https://www.world-war.co.uk/Kent/australia.php3 |
