Fly u-25 type 1a 1/00
I just completed the old hand drawn Fly 1/100 U-25 Type 1A U-Boat.
I made a solid lower hull by using balsa between the hand cut bulkheads. I filled the wood with drywall filler and sanded. Once I felt satisfied with the results I added several coats of Minwax polyurethane sanding between each coat with 400 grit. Then placed the paper bow, and both sections that have the open slots in place. Used more drywall filler and again polyurethane to feather out the paper into the balsa. The sides are the model paper, the sides are about 1/4 too long which is always better than being too short. Once the sides were placed I added the shafts, fins etc. to the lower hull then painted. I didn't see any internet references of the Germans using green anti foul paint on lower hulls so went with Model Master Rust. The rest of the construction was straight forward and no pictures were taken until I finished the model. The bulge ahead of the sail seemed to be way off so I scratch built it with balsa. Once sanded I painted it with 3 coats of Elmers white glue then sanded with 400 grit before painting. I mixed about 50/50 model maters dark gull gray and light gray and like the results with the paper printed color. The flag is pulled from Google images, I used old fashion paint brush brush to clean it, double it and printed it on 25lb copy paper. Finally folding and gluing. Highly recommend this old kit which is two for one, a Type XB mine laying U-Boat is also included. Joe :-) |

Interesting, the older two type 1A boats had hand rails cables over virtually the whole length of the hulls. The type vii boats are very similar but with additional fuel tanks strapped on the outer hull and minimzed hand rails. |

I used ca glue to laminate the deck and all other bulkheads. Ca prevents warping and i now use it exclusively to laminate. See the very large Yuri Gagarin. Laser cut, but all printed decks laminated using ca. Perfectly flat and no skeleton waves on the decks. Key is pre-alignment., you omly get one shot.

By far easier. Paper has no thickness and will ball up. I paper the bow and just ahead of the screws to get the openings and the anchor cavity. This is the 2nd time i didn't skin the lower hull. Yrs ago i did a low end destroyer model USS Madox this way with very good results. Felt then i would do again. Have many battleships and cruisers built with semi solid lower hulls the i skinned over balsa. All to very good overall results.
Picture of maddox hull to follow. |
