020 – Forward Superstructure
Thank you Rmks2000 and Radek.
This group of images shows progress with the forward superstructure. The charthouse, armored conning tower, navigation deck and mast upper gun platform have been completed. All those assemblies are created from paper, except the Nav deck (card). Some of the hazards of resurrecting old ships are the differences between drawings and photos. The two guns on either side of the conning tower, I believe to be approx. 130 mm (five-inch) guns. This is one of the many cases where the drawings appear to differ with the photos. One can see in the vintage photo 166 (just to the left of the sailor near the bottom of the image), one of the guns I am referring to. Compare that to the drawing (image 167) showing a rapid-fire 65mm gun for that location. The vintage photo seems to show a larger gun. Then see the second vintage photo (image 168) providing a view of the guns below in the hull, and the gun above on the superstructure. They appear to be the same size. I always give photos priority over drawings. Kind Regards, Mike Last edited by Michael Mash; 04-26-2022 at 07:20 PM. |

The new details look good.
I appreciate your sharing your research with us, including the puzzling apparent contradiction among sources - a phenomenon with which I am all too familiar. Don |

Real Life vs As Planned.
I tend to design fictional things, but on real subjects I also follow the photos over plans method.

Is coming out a really magnificent model, Mike !!
The study of the original sources (pics, books, plans, drawings, etc..) in order to establish which is the "real" status of the ship in a certain moment of her life is one of the most long activity that a model maker has to face. But this is a task that, really, can bring a model "to real life". Again many compliments for this superb model !! Ciao and happy paper-modeling. Jp

I'm flabbergasted. You are using regular copy weight paper for a majority of the structures???

Yes. I use card stock for the hull frames and decks. And also for a few other minor things like the floors of the turrets. Everything else gets made with either 20lb paper or 28lb paper. The 28lb is good for the walls of the superstructures. Paper is much easier to cut. It is thinner and has a much cleaner sharper edge. Last edited by Michael Mash; 04-27-2022 at 05:35 AM. But it is so smooth!
If I tried that, I would have wrinkles, buckles and various wonkiness. Very nice and careful work, sir

Nice work, Mike, really great!!
For Magenta, Neptune and ships of that era we work with the plans that we get compared to what the ship turned out to be. There must have been later plans but I seem to remember that France had some disturbances in its infrastructure since 1870 and some things have walked off. Keep working forward. Carl |
