10 – Railing and Cabins
Hello To All:
I decided it was time to make some railing. A pair of small pieces (seen in image 062) were needed for the top of one of the cabins. The first two photos show what should be enough handrails for the duration of the project. This is the classic French railing with the top stringer painted red. The two cabins, the railing and the ladders are all made of paper. Here (last photo) is an attractive historic image showing Neptune, and in the background is Hoche at Toulon. Note the number “1880” in the lower right. That cannot be the year, since construction on Neptune did not begin until 1882. This is a “Marius Bar” photo, so perhaps it is an inventory number. Drachinifel's* channel on YouTube has a segment on French ironclads and pre-dreadnaughts. Video is is title When Hotels went to war. The French navy had some decidedly strange ideas about ship design in the later half of the 19th Century. Of course that makes for truely unusual models.

Thanks Don.
Fred: Yes . . . in that photo it looks like they are getting ready to "raise the sails"! Thanks Mark for pointing out the Drachinifel You-Tube piece on the French pre-dreadnaughts. I had a chance to see the first six minutes. I will need to check back into it later for the remaining 43 minutes. It looks quite good. Mike |

I can hardly believe that this is a scratch built model, Michael.
I tip my hat again for you. |

@ Michael
@ abhovi It's just not fair. No one should be allowed to be as good at modelling as you two are. It's not that you give everyone else inferiority complexes, it's that you clearly show us we are inferior. |

Dear Michael:
What I really appreciate is how didactic your explanations and photos are. And yes, it show us how we are, but also how we can be, if we put the effort and the resources!!! Thank you for sharing. |

Great technique. I wonder what You use for railings - wire or thread? If thread how You make it stiff afterwards?
