Tovarisch (ex Gorch Fock)
I bought this many years ago and decided to build it now.
Actually it has been a very long time since I built any paper or even posted. The model is Wilhelmshavener kit #1266. 4 sheets of paper, one of which is the sails. |

It's your typical hull construction. The hull plating is straight forward but there was no joiner strip to attach the horizontal edges together, only the vertical forward tab.
Edge gluing this did not appeal to me so I made my own horizontal joiner strip. This definitely was the way to go and it just made the attachment of the hull here much better and easier. |

Again at this last piece of the hull was no joiner strip and again one was made. Actually, I just left additional card on the part to act as the joiner.

The completed hull plating. The ship has nice curves.

I have been working on the model for about three weeks and here is the completed hull ready for the masts,

A few more views. These three pages of parts put together provided more detail than I was expecting.

Masts are up and lower shrouds on. I am not a huge fan of making my masts and yards from paper so I use wood and/or bamboo for strength.

I want to put the ratlines on the shrouds and my means for doing that is to glue them on with cyano (crazy glue). I made this template on card so that I can get spacing consistency on all the masts.
I then cut these to a manageable size such that it will fit against the shrouds. Each of these smaller pieces will have the card notch cut on the edges so that the thread can lie into it. The thread can just weave from side to side as I go down the shrouds. I leave a loop on the back side which allows me to make tension adjustments before applying glue. I also insert some toothpicks between the shrouds and the card so as not to glue the ratlines to the card. I also covered the template face with scotch tape for the same reason. I did the ratlines in two stages with the gluing.

Just unclip the loops of the back off the card template when the glue is dry to remove the template and trim excess. I trimmed with a nail clipper.
Leaving the small loop on the edge of the card makes it easy to remove from the card whereas pulling it tight would dogear each of the cut tabs upon removal. |
