Dutch passenger liner MS Willem Ruys.

The Willem Ruys was ordered in 1938 by Rotterdamsche Lloyd from shipyard Koninklijke Maatschappij De Schelde (KMS) at Vlissingen. As a result of the Second World War and the post-war shortage of materials, the ship could not be finished and it has been on the slope in the city center of Vlissingen for seven and a half years. After the liberation of Vlissingen, the freshwater installation on board the ship supplied drinking water to the city for two weeks. When in 1944 the dikes of Walcheren were bombed in three places, causing a large part of the island to be flooded, the sloops of the Willem Ruys were used for transport over water.

The ship was intended as a counterpart to the MS Oranje that competitor Stoomvaart-Maatschappij Nederland had ordered in 1937.

It was not until July 1, 1946 that the ship was christened and launched. It was named Willem Ruys, after the Lloyd director Willem Ruys, who was shot during the war.

The Willem Ruys was the flagship of the Koninklijke Rotterdamse Lloyd and sailed until 1958 on the regular service that this company maintained to the Dutch East Indies and later Indonesia. During this period it transported many returnees who went to the Netherlands and emigrants from the Netherlands to Australia and New Zealand. For many passengers, the crossing with the Willem Ruys marked the beginning of a completely different life. In the night of 5 to 6 January 1953 the ship collided with the Oranje of the Stoomvaart-Maatschappij Nederland in the Red Sea. A few passengers were slightly injured, but the damage was not too bad.

In January 1964 the Willem Ruys was sold to the Italian Lauro Line, with delivery in January 1965. Lauro had the ship converted into a full-time cruise ship and named it Achille Lauro, after the founder of the shipping company.

On October 7, 1985, four men on behalf of the Palestine Liberation Front (PLF) hijacked the ship off the coast of Egypt while it was on its way from Alexandria to Port Said. The hijackers killed a passenger in a wheelchair, the Jewish American Leon Klinghoffer, and threw his body overboard. The ship returned to Port Said. After two days of negotiations, the hijackers agreed and left the ship for safe passage. The PLO was prosecuted for its role in the death of Leon Klinghoffer, but the lawsuit was dropped after the PLO paid an unknown sum of money to Klinghoffer's daughters.

Sometime after the hijacking, the ship resumed its cruise program. More than a year and a half later, on November 30, 1994, a fire broke out on board off the coast of Somalia. The ship listed and despite the help of a tug, it sank on December 2. With the exception of two British and two Dutch passengers, the people on board were able to leave the ship. Due to the great international fame of the ship as a result of the hijacking, this inglorious end was also world news.

A television movie about the hijacking was made in 1989 entitled The Hijacking of the Achille Lauro with Karl Malden as Klinghoffer and Lee Grant as his wife.

This model is a 1/250 issued by Scaldis in cooperation with JSC. You have the choice of building a full hul model or a waterline model. I opted for the waterline model as all the other dutch liners (except for the Rotterdam) are waterline models. All the extra parts came from etched cardboard sets, which can be optained seperately, including the railings. Railings made of see through plastic are included with the model.

Enjoy the pictures.

Fantastic build. Looks like museum quality ! I'm wondering how long it took to construct this beauty.

What a fantastic model! I am really impressed with the rigging, and the netting surrounding the tennis court - was that supplied in the kit I wonder?
The deck chairs and parasols do give it life!
Suggest putting the Dutch flag on a halyard - it seems to be wrapped around the flagstaff.
Magnificent model by any measure!

Cool

Nice model.

Looks like it was not built out of cardstock.
