1/600 WW2 Dutch light cruiser Java
I uploaded my new 1/600 waterline model of the WW2 Dutch light cruiser Hr Ms Java. Livery is a gray and green scheme as worn in February, 1942 when she sunk by Japanese torpedo in the Battle of the Java Sea.
Some illustrations show the scheme as two-tone gray. I think the green makes more sense considering the theater of employment - The Dutch East Indies. I included two Fokker C.XI W floatplanes that were assigned to Java, bur had been sent ashore to reduce the danger of dire and explosion in the event of a surface engagement. The aircraft were used for reconnaissance rather than spotting. Java had no catapult, so the ship had to stop in order to employ the aircraft by hoisting them from the ship's deck to the sea surface. The new Osprey book on the Dutch Navy in WW2 has a good description of the ship's design history and operations. Java had two sister ships. Sumatra was in European waters when Holland fell, so she served with the Royal Navy and was scuttled as part of the makeshift harbors for the Normandy invasion. Ceylon was never completed. Wayne |

Another great ship model, Wayne. You are working your way toward having designed models of all the major ABDA fleet units.

ABDA ships ... and opponents ... under design.
Thank you for this, Wayne. Early in my paper model ship designing, I wanted to do ABDA, and I've done in CAD (not png) HMAS Perth, the Tromp, and Brooklyn/Boise, but haven't gotten around to more.
The Imperial Japanese Navy set I am working up includes the Asashio and Shiratsuyu destroyers and Mogami/Mikuma/etc. and the Kongos. I've also done Jintsu in CAD - note the swan's neck curvature of the stem/bow in the photo - and I really should include that as a destroyer squadron leader. Tell Joe Boeke about this. He's on LinkedIn. He'll be thrilled. |

Thanks, Don and Lou. I really value your comments. FWIW, I am working on HMAS Perth now. I build the model in 3D first, and have recently taken to saving the model as an STL file, so I can view it easily. I have attached a couple of screen shots. The hull and basic superstructure are pretty much done, but there remains a bit yet to go.

Lou,
I looked up Joe Boeke on LinkedIn, but found there were several with the same spelling. Any clues as to which one I should contact? Wayne |

I back-channeled you with Joe's LinkedIn profile address, Wayne.
Nice 3-D outline of Perth, although at 1:1200 she'd be longer than 5". Interesting: the Papermodelers thumbmail photo of my photo of my Perth and Jintsu is larger than the one when I click on it. |

Dear Wayne,
Thank you for filling the gaps in paper and p1@$+1(! Very nice touch the Fokker scouts! I will print it in Ledger for 1/400 scale. |
