If at least a small amount of work can be done each day, the progress over time is surprising.

CL-52 update

Hi All;
Here it is one day after the last update and this is what was accomplished. The first picture was shot two days ago with the first quad 1.1 mount next to a penny. The second shot shows the same assembly sitting on the parts page. Frequently, while assemblies are under construction, there is a spare printed just in case I mess up, which happens to be fairly often. It saves card and ink. That unit took nearly two weeks. This post is intended to demonstrate the one thing a day principle. The last two shots were yesterdays work. The third photo shows the lifeboats being assembled. Note the handy clamps used to hold the ends together while the glue dried. Paperclips are very convenient for holding pieces together while glue sets up. The last shot shows the two lifeboats and the first 20MM gun, sitting next to the penny on a parts sheet. When the prototype finally gets put together, considerable time will be spent fitting as many components as possible on a page, omitting extra pieces and other clutter. in order to reduce the number of pages for the kit. Right now it's up to thirty five pages.
Regards, rjccjr

CL-52 update

Hi All:
Even though most of the parts are drawn, when it comes to test building there is still some revision necessary. For example, the lifeboats didn't look quite right and a little adjustment made them look a lot better. When working with assemblies where the parts are very small, it is useful to set all of the pieces down on a sheet of paper towel folded in quarters. The sheet provides color contrast and it is easier to see the tiny parts. The quarter fold makes a cushion so the parts can be handled more easily and it makes it simpler to keep track of the number of pieces cut, if there are several identical parts. At this point eight 20MM guns, two sets of torpedo tubes, four life rafts and eight support struts are under construction. One sample of each unit is constructed first and any changes to the drawings are made. That way, if something is awry, corrections can be made before going into mass production. An entire sheet of just rafts was made because the number aboard ship is not yet certain. The same is true of water tight doors as well. This will save a lot of time in case I mess up a raft. Simply cut and assemble another one. It's always a good idea to have a couple of spares just in case you mess up the build. It saves a lot of ink, card, and time.
Regards, rjccjr

CL-52 update

Hi All;
Although it wasn't intended to do the five inch guns until later, the first rotatable and elevated unit was done anyway, since I'm locking down the drawings for weaponry. It works, and the drawings are updated so that the other seven should be quicker to do. If you are interested you can find the operating manual for the real thing easily on GOOGLE. There were several common versions of the mount. The ones on CL-51 and 52 were model 28, which was quite different from later versions. The mounts on the DD-850 model were much later versions and were only of partial use for CL-52. So much for saving time! Oh well, research is half the fun. I never realized that it goes on forever. The turret build sequence shows an array of assorted parts, then the three major assemblies and finally the complete turret with a penny for size comparison. Strange to believe that there are 38 parts in that. Work at the moment is concentrated on the port side. The ships boat is in place, as are a couple of rafts on supports below the twenty MM gallery. One torpedo mount is now in place. I got lazy and decided not to make it rotate. The first turret is in the number three mount. The photo sequence shows the turret and fire director aimed to port, with the guns depressed. The second shows the director forward and the guns elevated. It is a lot of extra work, but it makes the model a lot more photogenic, by the time it gets on an ocean.

The excellent work continues.

By coincidence, this morning, I read an article in Warship International (Vol 60, No. 2, June 2023, pp. 106-117) concerning the colors and markings of Juneau January - September 1942. (Rick Davis, "The Appearance of the Cruiser Juneau (CL-52) in 1942."

As I read the article, Davis's conclusions jibe with yours.

If you send me a PM with a mailing address or email, I will send you a copy of the article.

Don

Hi Don' Got your message and the article. Intend to study it for a few days, and will get back to you. We seem to have much in common, military background, retired teacher and model building since the 1940s. Thank you so much.

CL-52 update

Hi All;
This has been a one step backward, two step forward kind of week. Looking at the first try for a five inch turret, it became evident that this version wasn't going to work. The dual five inch turrets one CL-52 had to have been the earliest mounts placed into service. The turrets were quite a bit different from the ones that we are familiar with. They were probably an early version of Mk 28 mounts. There is no photographic evidence of a gun captains hood on the top of the turret at this particular time. There appeared to be a short vertical pipe protruding from the rear center of the turret. On the back, there were no large cartridges chutes, only two small round ports for both guns. The crew access hatches were smaller. On the model ,looking from the front, the gun openings showed clearly that white card was quite visible. This all had to be redrawn. Fortunately, the basic drawings were correct and it was only a matter of clean up. The rear of the turret was simply redrawn to the proper configuration and the inside of the gun mounts was colored gray. The first two shots show the forward three turrets sitting in place. They rotate and elevate fine. Details are not finished, but that shouldn't take long. The third shot changes to the drawing. The alteration of the mounts from white to gray is evident at the bottom. The last shot shows the old turret compared to the revision. Next week's goal is to clean up the existing turrets, finish up the details, attach the forward turrets and start construction of the remaining five turrets.
Regards, rjccjr

CL-52 update

Hi All;
Most of this week was devoted to finishing the detail on the forward three turrets and making sure that they elevate and traverse successfully, which they do. It isn't a good tremor week so the assembly appears sloppy, but that's all that could be managed. Along with the turrets was the assembly and installation of life rafts along the sides of the hull in the area of the first stack. This also entailed the installation of deck supports, to which the rafts were attached. Photo 2r is a portside view showing the turrets facing forward. The support posts and rafts along the side are no yet in place. Photo 3r is a starboard view with turrets trained to the side and rafts installed. Photo 4r is portside again. 5r is a little closer and 6r has the turrets trained forward again. At first assembling the parts for the training discs was not working out very well. On the second try, cutting the inside discs inside the line and the outside discs outside of the line, gave a bit more room for the assembled unit to rotate and things proceeded well from there. A good deal of the stark white lines showing in the assembly was muted with water color paints. It looked rather sloppy because the tremors made it difficult. After looking at photographs of the ship, I didn't feel so bad because the paint job on the real thing was pretty beat up anyway.

CL-52 update

Hi All;
This is mass production week, an attempt to construct all five remaining main turrets as a group. That wasn't the original plan, but the drawings are done, the first turrets are in place, so why not get it out of the way? The first photo shows the basic components, gun shields, gun mounts, rotating tables and assorted gun barrels. The second shows the gun mounts with the gun barrels and rotators attached.The detail parts are off to the left. The third photo shows all eight mounts set on the prototype. The new mounts are just set on the model because the tiny detail parts still need to be applied and the gun barrels still need to be painted. The decision about how many rafts will be attached to the sides of which turrets is still up in the air. All five of the new mounts rotate and elevate quite easily. Cutting inside the line for the interior pieces and outside the lines for the parts they fit into makes all the difference in the world as to how easily they turn. Once this phase is complete, there are the 1.1 inch quad mounts to do, then the twenty mms. About these I'm in full procrastination mode. Perhaps it's time to take a break. The last photo shows a side view as it is at the moment. CL-52 is starting to look like what she is supposed to be. There is still a lot of work to be done and I'm not ready to predict a date of completion.
Regards, rjccjr
