CL-52 update

Hi All;
After spending considerable time going bug eyed from staring at photos some progress is being made with the superstructure. The first two ships in the class were unique designs. Subsequent vessels were considerably modified to correct weaknesses as they went along. Even Atlanta and Juneau were modified in the field. Considering the heavy use at the time many of the modifications were rushed during the breathers between assignments. It was decided to do the superstructure one deck level at a time. The top sections of each level are very hard to discern from available photos. progress is going to be slow, but it's getting there. Two obvious difficulties are a very narrow walkway between the tubs on the side of the pilot house and a somewhat "ad hoc" open bridge on top of the pilot house. The structures are incredibly cramped. Considering the visibility limits inside, especially in night operations in the Guadalcanal area that open bridge was a huge must. The first level of superstructure now fits well. The forward bridge and pilot house are coming along. The top of the pilot house is not quite there yet.

Model is looking good. I built The San Diego from the 2nd group. Built minus two 5 inch turrets abreast the aft superstructure. These were replaced by additional 40mm medium AA, but the 5 inch were removed to reduce the top heavy nature of these ships. They are beautiful but poorly conceived ships of dubious distinction in surface conflict. Designed exclusively as AA cruisers.

CL-52 update

Hi All;
Further development of the forward superstructure is under way. Drawings of the upper deck houses and tops have been made, but are not yet cut and folded. Three turrets are now in place. Since this is still the mock up stage, all fine parts are intentionally omitted until the large sections are fitted and lined up. At first look all those tubs along the side of the pilot house area were thought to be the same, and accessed through doors from the inside. Turns out that there is a very narrow walk way behind all of them and the shapes are suited to the instruments located in them. Each one is different. It is now very clear why the designers of plastic and resin kits were having trouble. In 1/700 and 1/350 scale it must be a mold makers nightmare. With such scant information on the first two ships and the very tight fit, it is extremely hard to keep the number of parts down and avoid becoming cost prohibitive. This is especially true if there are a large number of photo etched parts involved. The days of spitting out thousands of dubiously accurate kits are long gone. The demands of the modern market are such that cost estimates are very tight. Companies can only make a limited number of kits and sell all of them to be able to make enough profit to stay in business.

CL-52 update

Hi All;
When the parts for the pilot house were test fitted it immediately became evident that a redraw was required. The deck which had the side tubs was redone. Then the pilot house and roof were drawn and tested. Now everything fits. The side rails and tubs are not on yet, but the decks have the right shape. What you see here is not glued in place because the side rails and tubs need to be done before that happens. The next adventure will be dealing with the after deck houses and then, "oh joy", the stacks.

Looking good! Man, that is a lot of 5 inch guns, one could almost create their own smokescreen with those things firing.

CL-52 update

Hi All;
At this point the forward superstructure and bridge area are starting to look as they should. A good deal of detail redrawing is necessary, to get it right. This is going to take some time to work out, particularly the railing and bulwark areas. At the start of the project, it was thought that all the tubs in this area were identical. Actually no two are alike. Simply proves that you learn as you go. The Juneau has a lot of lessons to teach. No Model is ever perfect, but by the time this is over, I'll know what is right and what is not.

CL-52 update

Hi All;
The bridge and pilot house areas have been redrawn and the fit adjusted. The flag bags are now in place. Detail items such as the fire director, some railings, peloruses, compass repeaters and searchlights are not yet in place, because drawings need to be backdated and adjusted. The first photo shows the old bridge area (on the right) in contrast with the revision. The other three show the revised configuration in place. Drawing has begun on the rear stack area.

CL-52 update

Hi All;
When the original Atlanta's were designed they weren't quite cruisers and they weren't quite destroyers. They only had two screws and a small rudder. The top speed was thirty two knots on a good day and they could not turn anywhere near as sharply. as a destroyer. They simply were not much use against submarines. The armament wasn't heavy enough and protection was minimal to challenge cruisers. They were top heavy to begin with and additions after the start of the war made the situation worse. If you look at photos of the center superstructure you can clearly see an indentation in the wall behind the wing turrets. At first you would think it was for clearance when the turret rotated, but it only goes half way up the height of the turret. It is actually to permit crew to pass behind the turret when it is rotated and was only one deck high. The superstructure in this area goes up three deck levels. This presented quite a challenge since the basic assembly needed to be a single piece on the sides. The original idea of going up one deck at a time had to be scrapped, so the old deck house was torn out. The first three photos show the partially completed replacement in place. The last shows the new section complete with insets before folding. To the left is a trial assembly, which is flawed. The one on the board fits quite nicely. Once this is in place, the after gun mounts will be tested along with fire directors. Te color difference is because the printer is low on blue ink. It really doesn't make much difference for the mock up stage.
