CV-23 update

Hi All;

There are not a lot of pictures in this entry, but that is not to say that a great deal wasn't accomplished. Drawing FR. 52 53 now shows a cleaned up full frame. There are now all five frames from the booklet of general plans.

Although you may not see it at this point a good deal of the main deck has been cleaned. You may be able to make out the progress in the main deck drawing. There are some snags in the drawing, because the reproduction from the booklet of general plans was dirtier than expected, a little off center and showed several wrinkles when blown up for scale. The bulkheads will not be sized until the main deck is clearly defined. It's a lot like a sculptor carving a statue of a giraffe. You just chip away anything that doesn't look like a giraffe.

Years ago, I scratch built the USS Suwanee in plastic. In so doing, the plans were drawn for an oil tanker, and the upper works were added on top of the tanker, as shown in pictures p1 and p2. So this project is not entirely alien to me.

The decision has been made to draw the parts for the hull up to the main deck, then add the upper works on top of it. Why? That's because the walkways along the hull are set on top of the bulge. The works above them are narrower. Separate cleaned up drawings for the gallery deck and hangar deck may now be necessary to define where the gun tubs and accessories are attached to the hull. That's going to slow things down. On the other hand this is still in the early stages and coming along more quickly than it did for CL-52. There was no set of general plans for that. The plans were generated from drawings and a lot of calculating. So, even though much of the cleanup is a nuisance and the ship presents problems of its own, they should still generate a pretty accurate model.

Regards, rjccjr
