With some trepidation another SD14

Using a picture of the Catherine Olendorf at her launching in 1974.
On the picture I measure 70 mm from the bottom (somewhat obscured by trash)
to the water line. From the water line to the hawse pipe I get 48 mm.
This makes the waterline 59% (70/118) of the distance from the bottom to the pipe.
I will use this unless somebody comes up with a better answer.

Hallo,

As the most SD14 ships has been build On the Tyne ( Area around New Castle ) shipyards you will have to look for one of the museums in that area. Might be this is the right one: Austin & Pickersgill Ltd, shipbuilders | The National Archives
A couple of years ago I bought copies of original ship building drwings from them. Including one with the painting scheme. If you don't succeed I can look up that drawing .

Thanks Gert but it is just a model, it doesn't need to be that perfect.
Measuring the photo is good enough for me.


The last of the side plates are on with the cutout. The plastic frames worked out
really well. They support the bilge plates and don't block the view very much.
The interior lights affect the transparency somewhat. The last pic shows the
frames in natural light.


The plastic material is terrific. It is 0.010 inch almost the same as the card which
is 0.011 inch. It can be cut, scored an bent just like the card.
Imagine the whole model made out of transparent material!

hi everyone,
I haven't made much progress with the big cargo ship model.
It did get painted. Now it's just deck furniture. The 4 winches shown

are not painted yet and just set out on the aft house roof.
To go are 4 more winches, the big windless and the anchor and chain.

It took me the better part of 8 years (on and off and between other builds) to complete my version of the infamous SD 14.
Keep at it.
This is an amazing card model!

I thought that the model was almost done but I took it to the last meeting of the local
modelers club. They beat me up for no railings and the anchor chain too small.
Can't argue, they are right so I am not almost done.
Some pics of the current state.
Regarding the file storage issue, I always reduce my pictures to 1200/900.
I'ts not much trouble and I can't see any degradation. Also they upload faster.

Well here it is January without reporting the model. I am finally declaring the model
done. The railings are on and the anchor and chain are adjusted. The railings are
HO railroad scale of 1/76 whereas the model is 1/70 so they look a little small.
It was all I could find and I think they still look OK. The anchor and chain look
about right also. It is a very good experience to build this model as it is like
building the real ship. After all that was the point.
