MV Apollo car ferry 1:250 scale

This is a 1:250 scale model of the MV Apollo. Published by Paper Shipwright it is available as either a download or printed copy

I'm not really a fan of building large ships. But this has been in my build pile for far too long.

Glued the base of ship to a long steel ruler. Should help keep thing straight.

Due to the size of the model the hull sides are in two pieces. Makes for a join line. But can't be helped.

Glued and shaped the hull sides prior to installation.

Glued the rear on first, then worked forward. It went on okay. Not great just okay.

The steel ruler trick is genius, I will be sure to do something like that for any future 'long' builds.

Great! I have the British Rail version Earl Granville I think, in my mountain.
Smart idea with the steel rule by the way, I got glass panels cut for that same purpose but the ruler is also very good, better actually.

Regards,
Alan

Unfortunately, the Apollo didn't make it out of the shipyard

Too many mistakes. it went from bad to worse.

Final straw was me ballsing up the funnel.

Too bad, but it happens.

The images of the work in progress looked really good.

That's too bad Tim.

Did you buy the hardcopy or did you download it?

Would you try again? Actually I'm inspired to dig out my Earl Granville!

I was building a printed copy.

I think the main problem was building in a hurry, and not concentrating enough

It's a nice model, but I would not try again.

Ship models are not forgiving.

Well, neither are planes, aren´t they? Still, I agree that the hull is somewhat tricky around the bow and requires a bit of time, and the funnel has a really tight fit. Still, the model is basically sound and would definitly deserve a second chance - if You like it.

I did not yet finish mine (alas, which one did I ever?), but I really should and continue with her and her sisters - EARL GRANVILLE is already published, another one of the "Papenburg sisters" , the BOLETTE has been test-built in march and should be ready for us any time soon.

APOLLO would be worth a small fleet in her own right, having been ex- CORBIERE, ex-BENODET, ex GELTING NORD, ex-OLAU KENT before being renamend finally APOLLO 1995 and sold 2000 to the Woodward Group from St. John, Newfoundland, where she remained active until 2019 and being scrapped 2021 after 49 years of service. I would have liked her to reach the 50 and already started a recolour with her 2015 look.

And she was only one of nine Papenburg sisters.
