Frank Rockefeller in 1:200 scale

Mike Mash asked me to post some pictures of my recent scratch build of the whaleback ore carrier Frank Rockefeller. She was built in 1896 at Superior by the American Steel Barge Company and operated by Interlake Transportation Com. The model is built from the original plans.

Thanks Fred.
We don't get to see this type of vessel often.
Beautiful work!

I noticed in image number 3, beneath the model there is a nice large vintage photo lying on your table of a "whaleback" freighter. Looks interesting.

Beautiful model! I remember seeing whalebacks sailing o the Detroit River in the late '50's and early '60's. My dad was a Great Lakes maritime enthusiast and often, after he got home from work, we'd go down to the river and watch the ships pass.

Mike, that is a photo of Frank I used during construction, as the plans had some limitations.

Hi All,

And hi, Royaloakmin. That’s a wonderful job you did scratch building your Frank Rockefeller whaleback ore carrier. I’m sure it was quite a challenge to build the unique hull. With no chine and no sharp gunwales, there’s every chance that things could quickly go off the rails. Beautiful job on an interesting type of boat.

As a lifelong Minnesotan, I’ve made quite a few trips up to Duluth. (I recommend going in the summer months). There, interested parties can find the last remaining whaleback ore boat, the S.S. Meteor. Rather than me telling the tale here, please visit to the Wikipedia site given here:

SS Meteor (1896) - Wikipedia

As usual, there’s more on the Meteor to be found on the internet.

Michael Mash mentioned that he thought the photograph underneath your model was worth a mention, and indeed it is. That is the S.S. Christopher Columbus, the only passenger carrying whaleback ship built, and more can be found about this unique boat here:

SS Christopher Columbus - Wikipedia

A striking ship in many ways. My goodness, the funnel was even painted pink!

Enjoy…

Score and fold.

Thumb Dog
