K-278 Komsomolec GPM /1:200

Hello friends,

I came here with a new model on board: yep, that's a Russian submarine from the Cold War era. The model is from GPM, and I'm looking forward to showing you my steps, and hopefully we will walk together until the very end.

Some interesting facts about this type of submarine :

-the double hull was made out of titanium so the submarine could reach a depth of around 1000m.

-On April 7, 1989, a fire broke out on a submarine during a patrol cruise in the Norwegian Sea. The submarine surfaced, some of the crew jumped into the sea, but the fire-damaged pressure hull released water and the K-278 sank shortly thereafter.

  • I started the construction classically- with a skeleton. The skeleton was glued fine except for small inaccuracies of the parts, but they were easy to correct. The symmetry was maintained and what was overlapping was taken by grinder. I also had to add some extra "ribs" due to big gap between them in the middle part of sub.

  • Before I went to battle with the lining, I prepped the paint for retouching. Classic tempera from Tesco ( admittedly bought at 2x), but I finally managed to hit the shade - or at least I hope I did.
  • I started with the back, as I found it easier than the complicated bulging front. I can say that everything fit as it should, I praise the author that the flaps are in the color of the lining and all the inaccuracies that arose are my fault. The construction went on like this -segment by segment quite well and without any problems.
