IJN Akagi - Angraf
I am building both Kaga and Akagi side by side. Presented here is the lower hull framing for Akagi.
1st opinion, the Angraf kit is way better designed for assembly and although still lacking good instructions is much better than the Dom Bomagi kit. Another really nice feature is the construction of the hanger being entirely separate assemblies. I think I may be able keep the separate right up to the end. The kit also allows for inner hanger viewing. |

Excellent work. You are remembering the famous Midway battle. To complete the Japanese carriers, you need to add the Soryu and Hiryu. Your workmanship is excellent. Keep us updated with your work.

Are the Soryu and Hiryu available as card models?

Hiryu is available. GPM had an old printed Hiryu. Etsutan has a downloadable 1/400 scale paper model. No one so far has the soryu yet.

I built Angraf's Hiryu several years ago, absolute jem. Have Hornet in Dolittle's guise. No need to make either Enterprise or Yorktown as they are really close sisters. These Japanese ships are all very different, and yes would love a Soryu kit.
Hiryu had a much different hull, 1 deck higher bow and better rudders to account for issues with Soryu. Hiryu was actually a new design. The later, too late to make a difference Amagi class were Hiryu rebuilds. Here is the hanger structure. For some reason Angraf seems to think the ships internals were dark grey so I flipped all of the parts. |

I believe the Angraf kit is still available. |

Wow, a lot of sub structure on those!

I will echo Bluenoser here, that is a lot of framing there. I can imagine it will make the skinning of the hull somewhat easier, and the resultant model very sturdy.

Hull plating I started. I'll be filling, sanding and painting but at least the Angraf kit has good color control from page to page.

The hull has been filled and sanded. The form like Kaga is well suited for this process. The nicest thing about this kit is the hanger is not installed to much later making this much easier work.
