The kids are up north near Trondheim with their mom, so I've had time to work, and I've done the H class destroyer leader Hardy (destroyed and beached in the First Battle of Narvik) and am about to finish The Fightingest Ship (book) Helena CL-50 of Guadalcanal and Kula Gulf fame.
I don't have Internet at my apartment yet, and I LUCKILY found a perfect photo of Helena's bridge, taken in July 1942. Sistership St. Louis's was much different. So there will be 32 plans in the book now ... and maybe another for the Benson/Gleaves. The later Hunt escort destroyers and later prewar German (Karl Galster) destroyers will have to wait for the supplements. Working ... working. I'm even getting sick of solitaire, which I use to break the intensity from time to time. Designing becomes fun by comparison. I'll be including my Naval Action naval miniatures combat results table. As I have said, I build these things for BATTLE. I want to get this book DONE. Being a retired librarian - and my status as such has now been officially recognized over here - I've even got Cataloging In Publication (CIP) to make it more digestible to libraries. But the (Norwegian) *price* .... :-( |

Awesome!
I may have missed it earlier, but any chance of getting a list of what is making it into the book (those 32) at this point? Doug |

Sleipner coastal destroyer DD
Sangamon class escort carriers (Only the Bogues are available in injection plastic) CVE South Dakota/Alabama BB San Francisco CA Wichita CA Brooklyn CL Helena CL Benson/Gleaves DD - all 4 variants Sims DD Bagley DD (16 tubes) Butler DE Monitor *Rodney BB *King George V BB Norfolk/Dorsetshire CA London CA Perth CL Dido (and Black Prince?) CLAA Charybdis CLAA H class leader Hardy DL H class DD (both long bridge and short bridge - I'll try to include quintuple/pentad mounts for the I class ... we'll see) *Tribal class DD *JKN class DD Hunt Type 1 ED K class light cruiser CL Z1 Maasz class DD Moewe class torpedo boat TB d'Abruzzi light cruiser CL Navigatori DD Jintsu/Sendai/Naka (it sounds like a snake) CL Shigure DD The plans will not be colorized. Inkjet dye ink fades and toner cracks over time. Painting is best for models. I *will* dtp-print the drawings in inkjet: better to have them fade some than chip away. *Done for my 1:1200 set complementary to the Airfix Sink the Bismarck set - I had already done but not colorized Norfolk/Dorsetshire - but that scale may just be too difficult for people to do. Again, thanks for your interest (and encouragement), guys. |

Ummm, just 'thinking off the top of my head', as the old saying says, isn't there some naval history involving Trondheim?
Don't do military models much any more but do remember what I think were paper models of Narvik class DDs in an ancient copy of now gone Scale ship Modeler magazine and reall am inclined to remember them as paper models. And want to say they were attractive little DDs.

Yes, southwestforests. Trondheim is the historical and cultural capital of Norway, where Niardos Cathedral is located in which the kings and queens of Norway are crowned.
On 9Apr40, Scharnhorst and Gneisenau brought in German troops ... and then skedaddled for fear of being cornered in a Norwegian fjord like those 10 destroyers were up in Narvik. My paper models are much simpler than the European variety by Wilhelmshaven and the Polish and Russian companies, and they are more for 1:700 scale ... for (wargaming) BATTLE. :-) |

I like the way the list is shaping up. I'll be building some up to reflect squadrons operating around the Solomons. The Shigure may end up standing in for a few of its relatives, the Japanese CL will come in handy, and I think I have a free download Japanese CA around here somewhere on my hard drive (although being greedy, more Japanese CAs and DDs would never go amiss).
I do like the variety of pre-Fletcher American DDs, great for action in Ironbottom Sound. Doug |

Doug, FYI:
There *is* a free paper model of a bigger WW2 Japanese destroyer class, at ???????????????? - ????1/350??????????????? However, it is in late war configuration, with the twin 5" X turret (supposed to be) replaced by more antiaircraft guns. It wouldn't be too hard to run a second copy for the 3rd turret and mount it where it was. And you'll have to 50% reduce it to 1:700 and cut away the full hull. I actually think my Shigure looks better, even if it isn't colorized: look at the break lines in the Yukikaze hull, for example, and my Shigure prototype was 1:350 too. I plan on doing a Yukikaze ... or Fubuki with the 3x3 (as opposed to Y's 2x4) Long Lance torpedo tubes ... but no time soon. Lots of other beauties to seduce (into models, and like a woman every ship is beautiful in her own way). |

Lou,
Thanks for pointing that out, I grabbed the 1/350 Akagi off of Y's site, but I did not see the Yukikaze until now. Given my slowness in building anything, chances are by the time you get around to doing a Yukikaze I might be finally ready to build one! Doug |

In the book, I'll include my Naval Action naval miniatures combat sequence and results sheet and with a brief description of the rules. I may put NA's rules and ship statuses (but not combat sheet) up on my www.CoatneyHistory.com webpage.

In the book, I will also be putting my "two thumbs" Naval Action naval miniatures war game rules' sequence & combat resolution sheet, and I think I'm going to put the rules themselves and rest of the ship (class) status sheets up on my www.CoatneyHistory.com webpage ... but that will be later.
Following those, I am also going to put a few of my quickie "2D model" (profiles), to be used with the rules "... only until you do their 3D namesakes," thereby encouraging book owners to start (and finish) their 3D models. }:-) The profiles are all from my (government publication, ergo public domain) ONI manuals, of course. |
