That is a great goal......building the carrier strike force. I may try that in plastic also. Great idea!

Thanks

Not really, Kaga and Akagi had many differances; smoke stacks, island placement, hull layout etc. Hiryu and Soryu were closer in overall profiles and you could probably pull it off. The Fly Akagi kit is very detailed for its scale and can be enlarged to 1/200 without any great loss of detail.

Hiryu and Soryu were almost as different as Akagi and Kaga. Akagi was originally a Battle Cruiser and Kaga a battleship. Akagi's sister ship was destroyed during conversion and Kaga was substituted prior to breakup as result of Washington Naval treaty. Hiryu was several thousand tons heavier than Soryu, had a higher bow and completely different deck layout. It wasn't till Shokaku and Zuikaku that Japan actually built two sister carriers.

The strike force of 6 carriers will require 5 completely different models, good luck.

Group;

Sorry for the delay on this project. I'm just completing a 1/700 plastic USS Blueridge for a friend who served on her. This old shipmate had a long year and putting it in a case for him as a Xmas gift.

I will start on the Akagi in about a week. I think I built up the courage to take her on. I will start with glueing the formers to cardstock and I will make sure I post photos.

Any advice before I get started? This will be a long slow project. I will keep her at the 1/300 scale. I have reviewed the instructions and layout.

Let me know if you guys have any tips.

See you soon.

Sam

Any leads on 1/300 PE railings? Would 1/350 look OK? Any help would be great.

Thanks,

Sam

Sammuel,
Glad to see you are going to do a build thread on this sometime
soon. Will be watching your progress. I normally restrict my builds
to aircraft but I have done some ships as a diversion when I get
in a rut. Both being ex Navy men we have some interests that
coincide. Looking forward to your build.....Ron

1/350 will be ok. In scale the differance would be a couple inches that in 1/300 would be measured in fractions of a milimeter. I do it all the time for railings. Bigger things like mainbattery guns and such would be a couple mm noticeable differance

CMDRTED;

I was thinking the same thing. Thanks for the info. I will go with a 1/350 set. For now I'm just looking at railings. Do you think I should pick up the 1/350 Akagi PE set?

Thanks
Sam
