Free Confederate Submarine - CSS Pioneer

Most of you have probably missed the fact that CT Ertz has a new model in the download section. The new model is the CSS Pioneer, a submarine that predates the (CSS) Hunley. The sub was built in New Orleans and was purposely sunk when the Union forces threatened to capture it.

Corey's model is 1/72 scale. Scale it down to 12.8% if you want it in 1/250 scale. The model is on one sheet, but also includes a couple of sheets of a rough top and side view drawing.

I used a spoked wheel stolen from the sewing box to put a light rivet detail by rolling it along the back of the pieces. I made up a couple of rounds to put in the main cylinder to make sure it stays round. I also used a couple of strips to help keep the cones together. I punched out the portholes and used a drop of white glue to act as windows. Small brass rods was used to build up the propeller shroud supports and steering rods. I also used a brass rod to connect the two diving planes. Finally, brass rods were added to represent the base of the screws used to attach the explosive charge to the intended target.

Some changes I recommend to CT (I have to throw in my two cents worth):

Put some circle bulkheads on the plan for the main cylinder. Color the area of the hull where the charge bracket attaches to it, the white area shows unless it's colored. I made up another bracket for the control rods above the propeller shroud per the photos above. Add the screwbases to the instructions (the location is already marked on the hull). Finally, it needs the explosive charge to mount on the bracket.

Overall the model builds quickly and makes a nice little display.

Honey, I shrunk the submarine. Since the rest of my Confederate fleet is 1/250 scale, I shrunk the Pioneer so it fits in with the rest. Prop shroud support tubes are shavings from a carbon fiber rod. Main hull is printed on 110lb paper, accessories are printed on 65lb paper. I'm glad most ironclad models are 1/250 instead of 1/400 scale.
