Unfortunately what you describe is an "appliance" not a computer though we are making strides towards "appliance computing".

I went from XP to Win7 with my netbook and that wasn't too big a leap but I went from Office 2000 at home to Office 2010 and that was a mega-leap so feel for what you are going through in a ten year leap of Windows versions...if it helps, just bear with it and you end up way better off with the new versions...the pop-ups and proprietary software are another issue and I have finally purged them off my machine too...

Not for the Faint of heart. This is how to take control of your computer. It is called Windows "GOD MODE".

Windows 7 32bit, 64bit and Windows Vista 32bit only
Create a folder on the desktop (or anywhere really) and use this string as the name:

GodMode.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}

The icon will change, and you'll get access to the God Mode Panel which give you quick access to just about every configurable setting in Windows.
It is functional on Windows 7 64bit, 32bit and Windows Vista 32bit.

Windows Vista 64bit only.
For Vista x64 users, make a shortcut and set it to point to: explorer.exe shell:::{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}

Use at your own risk

Know this is a old thread, but still having things in Windows 7 po'ing me that were so easy in Win2000 and before. Can't even imagine what the problems with 8 are, but guess Microsoft is already moving on to a new version since there seemed to be so many complaints. Still waiting for that computer appliance. Maybe I should chance my avatar to an old troglodyte. Going back in my cave now.

Funny, because I think Win 7 is the best ever to happen to Windows.

Even though I am a PC user, I will never give MS or Windows high marks
for anything...but Windows 7 has worked better for me than every other version.
The fewest number of problems and conflicts...and the fastest speeds.

And I have plenty of personal experience with them all...except Vista.
Vista I experienced through friends and avoided it like the plague!

Whulsey, I think I still have a set of Windows 3.11 install disks downstairs...in my opinion, maybe the high point of windows development. It's been downhill ever since. If I had my druthers, I'd still be going with XP on all my computers, and am wondering what is going to happen next year when microscam completely stops supporting it. Maybe pull my Amiga 4000 out of storage and fire it up again. I know just where it is...but have to move a couple of Commodore PETs (still in original box) to get to it.

along with a few subsequent versions.

Darwin...if you like XP and are well versed in XP, then you should LOVE Win7
It does everything XP does, but it does it properly and faster.
Sure, theres a small learning curve, but its not that bad.

"Microscam"...LOL I like that one
fits with the fact that they go out of their way to mess with anyone who uses
their product without a proper license, and yet its a known fact that microscam
used - without any permissions- a ton of pirated programs to make up the whole
Windows thing.
Apparently all those little extra programs, gadgets, doodads and thingamajigs are
all pilfered software.
Even the "windows" idea was pilfered from Apple!!

Dave, I hate to disagree...but even apple was lightyears behind Commodore with respect to GUI. The start was GEOS on the old C-64, then the Amiga just blew away all its competition. My 'toy' Amiga 600 amazed my company's computer geeks who, at a major national nuclear laboratory, were still fixated on command line interface and amber-screen displays. I still contend that, if the commodore had chosen to compete with Apple instead of Atari, we would all be using Amigas today.

I had a C-64 and GEOS on a 5.25" floppy disk. Even had a subscription to that C-64 magazine. Them was the days!

Windows 7 isn't bad. I had a Vista machine with a free upgrade to Windows 7 when it was released. Man, was I glad that happened. Got tired of watching that little blue circle spinning around.
