gametextures.com - any reviews?

NB: Moderators, I wasn't sure what forum to put this thread in, so I chose this one. Feel free to move it if it doesn't fit in.

Hi all.

In the eternal hunt for textures, I've come upon www.gametextures.com on an almost daily basis, and finally decided to check it out. Their textures seems like high quality, but I thought it was more or less like a stock photo service and figured their business model would be something along the same lines as Shutterstock or similar. But I was actually pleasantly surprised finding out, that it only costs 15-20 $/month, depending on your level of commercial license, for which you can download up 50 textures a day, potentially around 1,500 textures a month.

Now, these textures are really made for video game designers, but the few samples I've seen seems to be perfectly suited for what we do. So my question is, if anyone around here know them and uses their services, and if you can recommend it? I'm almost convinced, but I figure I'd just do a quick survey before signing up.

One that I use extensively is texture artist, freelance game artist they have a great selection for sci-fi stuff. The panels can be joined flawlessly. Here is one example from my Steampunk track vehicle

around 1,500 textures a month????
They only got 1,562 textures!!!
Not sure, if you going to pay $20, they should let you download all of them instantly.

Never paid for a texture yet..... got a tablet
Most textures I make are from photos, the made up 'game' textures always seem unreal, which is what you get from mathematically generated textures, they have a style all of their own, which isn't one I like.

Are most of them in the 'style' you want?

Genetica is a nice free one if you don't have it already.

Yeah, that's the thing - the 'unreal' look is actually what I'm looking for. I'm making game terrain for a superhero comic book style setting, so the 'unreal' look seems to fit perfectly to this 'unreal' theme. Also, I find, that while photorealistic textures can make for a nice look, it can be more uphill to find textures that 'fits' together in terms of style, as style also applies in the photorealistic realm. By using a site like that, I'd get artistic consistency (I assume).

Where did you see that they only have around 1,500 textures? (Not that it's not a good deal).

Textures do make a big difference. I like collecting my own with a camera, and I have a good collection from the 'net. I would never pay for a texture....

If that's the look your after these seem ideal, you might want to shop around a bit first, texture packs are always on more than one site.
Guessing you only need the diffuse textures, so 1500 textures for $20 does sound quite good. Just over a penny a texture, all in a similar style, sounds good.
The left hand column on the site gives you the total textures for the category, just add them up.

Try the popular sites as well, Daz3D/bryce, renderosity, secondlife, deviantart

I once spent a week looking for a decent window texture before stealing one from my linkalite kits.
Photoshop and a tablet is great for turning real into unreal.......
Using 3D you can also get rid of lens and perspective distortion.

See you next month
