Rhino does the real 2*R*PI-length thing and it has heard about curves.

Exclamation Student version of KeCreator Direct CAD - Free

I reccomend a full version of KeyCreator Direct CAD - the most complete direct modeler. Student versions are available at no charge. This is a very easy to use and learn full CAD system that has the ability to import and export multiple CAD file formats.

Send and email to [email protected] and explain you are a student looking for KeyCreator Direct CAD and we will help you out.
Best regards,

Scott

Scott,

can you give me some more details about a student's license? I can't find anything about it on the website. If you want, you also can send me a PM.

As you say it can unfold cylinders, do you know how this is implemented? Is the cylinder transformed into a prism before doing this (resulting in the pepakura-like edges) or is it the real 2*R*PI-length?

Thorsten
Thorst Rhino model are build by surfaces not for polygon meshes. This is way is so well suited for paper modeling. You can model the paper surfaces directly, you don't need translate meshes to surfaces to develop them.

About the student version here you can see the prices for my region:
Buy - Rhinoceros
and you have the price for students. I think they have a similar page for Europe.

Alcides

Thorsten -

We are just kicking off a student initiative in the Americas to give students in the Americas a free license to our software. I see you are in Germany. Check with luca@kubotekeurope to see what the student version options are there.

I have now gone through some tutorials for Rhino with the test version and I'm already impressed! My order for the student version is submitted!
I also tried TurboCAD, but found Rhino more intuitive, and with all the impressive work done by members of this and other forums, I'm sure that it can do what I want.

Thanks for all the input!

Thorsten
