People went off tif in 2009.

Tiff is a container file rather than an image file, which is both it's main good point and bad point, you can save as lzw compressed bitmaps, multi pages, with jpeg compresion, etc, but not many programs support everything. Not sure if print shops will take PNG these days, I know they used to be TIFF only. Top quality digital cameras will let you choose between tiff and jpeg format, though most of us have to settle for looking at the compression artifacts, which are sometimes more interesting than the photo. ALL JPEG formats are lossy, even 100% quality. (probably won't notice it though)
