New Sketchup plugin coming soon!

Looks like a new Sketchup plugin is to be released soon. It's not out yet, but three demo video tutorials are already on YouTube. See the link below for one of the videos and their homepage.

Ok, I got this response from the company:
Quote:
What is your suggestion for intermediate pricing? For instance, $50 for a 1-year use (similar to academic pricing), or $100 for unlimited use? Which do you see working within the budget of hobbyists? Also, how do you propose to distinguish between commercial users and hobbyists unless we leave out a feature and call it PhotoSketch Lite? I am interested in hearing your suggestions.
Anyone want to offer a suggestion?

If they have to ask...

I think it's interesting that you took the time to write the company, and even more interesting that they wrote back, but it's clear that they're interested in profiteering. I noted a really snarky tone of derision in their reply that rubbed me the wrong way. Yes, it's great they want to make money off of their little product, but wasn't the whole idea of Sketchup that it was supposed to be Open Source from the get go? Why then are they trying to cash in on it? Even if it wasn't, do they want goodwill from their potential client base, or do they want to come off as "don't talk to me unless you have buckage in your hands"... That's how they sound to me.

My suggestion is, tell them that you're disappointed that they want to charge at all...

Um. Well, I'm not a socialist and I personally think what they're doing is fine.

Lancer,

ROI, Return On Investment.

It is true that Google has released a basic version of Sketchup, and they do charge for the pro version.

and some of the coders/designers release their code for free, and some charge some amount for it.

But the true power of Open Source is not that it should be free, but for the architecture of the software is to be open, and easily changed/updated.

and I believe that those programmers are allowed to get some return on their investment.

maybe their next plugin will be free, who knows

Rick
