Yes, understand. For me it was going from XP to 7. All of my expensive wide-format printers wouldn't work. My $3500 copy of AutoCAD wouldn't work. Was going to buy an Imac to do my on-line browsing. (Far fewer malware issues). However when looking for a good/newer computer to run XP was able to purchase a machine that had dual hard drives in it. Now I browse using Win 7 on one hard drive and the other is my XP machine. Hassle is I have to shutdown and then unplug/plug-in the hard drive I want to use. I use a SD card to transfer data back and forth. Was able to remove all the anti-malware software and all un-needed programs from the Xp drive. Guess what, it is incredibly fast and works great for AutoCAD and printing. To share PDF files is easy, just copy to the SD card, shutdown, swap drives and reboot. In my bank account is a budget fund that grows by $25 every payday. Purpose? To buy a new Mac! Mike |

Mike, you can have more than one harddrive attached.
No need to plug/unplug harddrives. If its because you have two operating systems (one on each drive) its still not necessary to plug/unplug. You can run more than one OS on a single system. When Win 7 first appeared, I installed it on my XP system. This allowed me to try it out, test software, etc...before I removed my XP. Its called dual-booting. When the computer starts up it will give you the option of which OS to boot. (It defaults to one or the other if you don't choose) I have considered running Win10 as a second OS to try it out, but the setup/install won't allow for that. It must overwrite an existing earlier version of Windows.

You can go with dual boot instead of plugging and unplugging the hard drive. As for malware, market shares dictate where hackers invest their time. Apple with their closed system, can better hide malware issues. OS/2 decendants are practically imune to malware, small market share is not worth investing time and effort to hack.

I run AdBlock (add-on) in all my browsers
and MalwareBytes AntiMalware (real time). On top of Avira Free Antivirus. I have not had a virus or intrusion since using Win7. Thats more than 3 years now. I am NOT "pro-PC", but Malware is no longer a justification to switch to Mac.

I upgraded my son's laptop from 8.1 to 10 a few days ago. I did his first so that I could try all my software out on his computer before upgrading my computer. So far, I've tried my copy of Adobe Design Standard 5 (Photoshop, Acrobat, Illustrator & InDesign) and so far its working. Even though there is a button to downgrade from 10 back to 7 or 8.1, I still need to install my pen tablet drivers and various other software that I use regularly before I hit that upgrade button.
One thing I made sure to do when upgrading on my son's laptop was to TURN OFF all the settings which MS has default to ON for sharing things; including contacts, data usage reporting, that keylogger and WiFi passwords. Even though the wifi passwords are encrypted from my computer to MS to a guest visiting my home, I still don't need MS taking my password and providing it to anyone who visits my house or lives next door to me because they know me and are a contact of mine. |

I'm very happy with my W10 update except for one thing: Drivers.
W10 replaced all my drivers with the default/generic drivers. I read that W10 will always do this from now on. It will override 3rd party drivers with its own, if it has one. I lost some printing/configuration options on my EPSON printer/scanner. :( |

Cool! I'll check it out.
The feature that I lost was the duplex booklet printing. Yes, I know it's not a feature that I use everyday. But it's still a loss for me. |

How much of reinstalling software after an update and is there a list site that shows/tells how to turnoff the unwanted garbage?

I have not installed Winnows 10 yet but have heard of some of those privacy problems that it might cause. Ran across this website that lists some of the features you need to think about turning off to protect your privacy and bandwidth.
Windows 10 privacy problems: Here's how bad they are, and how to plug them. I had been wondering about some of those potential problems after seeing all of the advertising for Windows 10 and reading some of the articles in magazines about the OS.
