Thumbs up Pepakura v4.0

I fired up pepakura this morning---and I got a notification popup. It said v4.0 is released.
SO I went to their website and checked the revision history.
When I saw it, I was in disbelief.

1) Support for up to 8000px width textures!!!!
2) Support for Hardware Rendering!!!!!

I checked the calendar -- APRIL6. It ain't APRIL1. Too late for APRIL1... So I proceeded to download.

I grabbed one of my WIP models and upped the textures from 1024x1024 to 8000. Saved. Then reloaded in Pepakura.

And true enough, the hirez textures were supported! I did not get the dreaded "textures downsized to 1024" message.

Next, I enabled HW rendering. I also went to my nvidia control panel and overrode the AA setting to 32x. I restarted Pepakura and yep, no more jagged edges.

Kudos to Pepakura to finally relaxing the 1024x1024 texture limits and supporting HW rendering.

(I no longer have to shell out 100usd for that hires plugin)

Also, they changed the file format, so PDO tools is broken at the moment.

I have installed the version '4'. They have installed a new default folder.
Therefore the version '3' is still intact and functioning.
All with the same Licence Key.

Orazio.

However, now we have two applications 'Pep': version 3 and version 4.
These applications seem entirely distinct.
Version 4 does not open the files for version 3 and vice versa.
The same applies to the viewers.

Orazio: Version 4 doesn't open just *some* of the old files - seems more like an accidental error than intention. In addition, if it fails to open a file, the HW rendering option gets disabled and you have to turn it on. I'll report it to them, if somebody already didn't.

Edit: it seems that only files from Designer 2 can't be open, files from older/newer version work. I reported it to Tamasoft.

There's also some more new stuff that they don't mention, like direct export to PDF.

I have just tested a few things with the version 4 and I am able to open version 3.18 designs of mine and edit it.

The functions are the same from 3 to 4, but I did notice a few cool things in that of rotating the flat model and few new functions like Highlighting the bend lines some of the 2D options have now become icons to speed things up.

I quickly tested a model and the way one does joining and moving faces around is still the same.

I am happy with the new version.

:-)
