In my opinion one of the reason why people don't leave comments is that "download" section has less personal link with author. Of course the name is shown and the comment section box really visible, but still it is not the same like to reply to a post. Customers probably think that "downloads" section is the same like on the rest of websites. Maybe it would improve situation if after downloading the reminder would appear "Don't forget to thank the author or write a comment. It's important and etc."

I have made appreciative comments in the forum, but I am guilty on the 'Thank you' part. I guess I am confusing 'praise' with 'thanks'. Thank you to all of you designers who have made your models available.
As far as comments in the Download Section. I feel that comments there need to be about your own personal experience in building the model (sort of part of the rating system). So often when I download a model, it may be months later when I actually build it. If there is a thread in the forums about the model, I usually post my comments there rather than trying to figure out where it was in the Downloads. That, and sometimes I get lazy and/or forgetful.

expecting people to thank you for free stuff? wishful thinking.... what, according to your counter, was confirmed by remaining 299.994. shame, but don't expect much of it.

I put my models up for free because it is 'fanart', I don't even lock/password the files. I make the models for fun, it is a hobby after all. I don't even KNOW how much downloads I get on my models and frankly, I don't care about that.

I agree it can be "different culture" issue. I put some of my models for free and never had a single thought I would like hear any "thanks" for that. My biggest reward is to see my models built by others. It is then real pleasure, not just "manners".
But I can understand somebody sees it different way. |

I always thank the designers in the threads, but when it comes to the download section I lack on thanking them there... My apologies.

Hi, I don't represent the "other" culture about thanking for free downloads. But the way to thank the designer, in my opinion, is to build it, show it and there and then say thank you and how much you appreciate the design etc.

I don't thank every person and every site that I have downloaded something from,
and I don't expect thanks from all who download from me. I agree with many here...and I definitely agree with legion. Its fun to see how many downloads I have given over the last five years but I don't dwell on those numbers. I don't compare downloads to thank yous. The chatter on the forums lets me know that my free models are liked. I do appreciate the occasional email and donation... and I get them. They are few...I admit ...but I think the frequency reflects a normal return rate for the Internet and life in general. I don't expect much more. If I stood outside my house and handed out free gifts, most people are forced to confront me and thank me, but most would like to grab their gift and run. Its not about being rude...its just being normal. I am the same way. As many have said, one of the biggest rewards, and the one I ask for more than anything else, is to see a model built. Sure, I need photos for the store...it can help sell more models, but I just love to add more pics to my private "Gallery" folder of photos. And that folder is growing!

Of course a thank you is always nice but there are many things free for which no thanks is ever given.
How many free apps do you have on your phone or tablet? Did you track down the designers to thank them? What about the free PDF unlocker on your computer or the Metric/AF conversion spreadsheet you downloaded and shared with friends. The term "free" is generally taken as not requiring anything in return. If something is given, such as a donation or thanks then that is a bonus. Now may I take this opportunity to thank all the designers out there that offer free products. I hope you get as much enjoyment out of designing them as I get out of building them. Once again Thank You. |
